What is a commercial wire drawing machine?
A wire drawing machine makes wire thinner and longer by pulling it through a die with a hole smaller than the wire. The end of the rod is first pointed so it can be threaded through the die, then gripped on a rotating drum called a block or capstan, which supplies the pulling force. A multi-pass machine has a row of dies and blocks, and each block turns faster than the one before because the wire gets longer at every die. Lubricant, either a dry lubricant in a die box or a liquid bath, cuts friction and heat. Copper and aluminium lines often add an annealer, which softens the wire so it can be drawn further.
This page covers commercial and industrial wire drawing machines for wire mills, cable plants and fastener makers; hand-cranked, hobby and bench-top models are not covered.
How diipl verifies wire drawing machine manufacturers
diipl checks every wire drawing machine manufacturer before a buyer meets them. Every seller is GSTIN verified and capacity audited. IEC and the certifications your product and market need (ISO, CE, REACH, BIS) are confirmed before any meeting; Certificate of Origin and EIC inspection are arranged per shipment where required.
For wire drawing machines, the capacity audit also covers:
- A trial draw on rod of your grade at the rated line speed, with the finished wire measured for diameter and roundness along the coil and the die and capstan temperatures watched during the run
- The drive and control system working on the factory floor: each block motor and inverter, the dancer or sensor arm response as the line starts, speeds up, slows and stops, and the wire-break stop
- Capstans, blocks, die boxes and cooling water circuits inspected for surface finish, hardness records, leaks and flow, with the dies supplied checked against the die list
- In-house machining, grinding and balancing of blocks and shafts, with rotating blocks spun at working speed to check for vibration
- Guards, emergency stops and stopping devices along the operating side tested during the visit, and the electrical panel checked against its drawings
We match your requirement to a manufacturer that has passed these checks and arrange a direct meeting.
Types of wire drawing machines we cover
Indian wire drawing machine manufacturers on the diipl bench build these commercial and industrial types.
| Type | Typical buyers |
|---|---|
| Straight-line dry drawing machine | Steel wire mills making wire from coarse to fine sizes |
| Bull block and inverted vertical drawing machine | Cold heading wire drawers, makers of rebar and weld-mesh wire, and alloy and stainless wire makers |
| Twist-free block drawing machine | Makers of stainless steel and high-carbon spring grade wire |
| Wet drawing cone machine | Makers of plated, stainless and alloy wire such as welding wire and tyre cord |
| Copper and aluminium rod breakdown machine | Copper and aluminium conductor makers starting from rod |
| Intermediate and fine copper wire drawing machine | Makers of fine copper conductor wire for tele-data cable extrusion lines |
Straight-line dry drawing machine
Drawing blocks stand in a row and the wire runs from block to block through its dies. Sensor arms or dancer arms keep each block matched to the speed of the wire. One Indian maker lists capstans from 300 to 900 mm, wire from 0.5 to 16 mm and speeds up to 22 m/s. The dancer-arm version suits wire below 4 mm and is required below 1.5 mm. Choose it for multi-pass drawing across a wide range of wire sizes.
Bull block and inverted vertical drawing machine
Machines for coarse wire. Bull blocks, in horizontal and vertical versions with variable drives, suit coarse wire for cold heading, rebar and weld-mesh. The inverted vertical type draws coil to coil and winds the drawn wire straight onto carriers. One Indian maker lists wire from 5 to 36 mm, block diameters from 610 to 1200 mm and motors from 30 to 180 hp for its inverted vertical range, for alloy, high-carbon and stainless steel wire. Choose it for thick wire.
Twist-free block drawing machine
A twist-free machine in which a free bobbin block collects the wire and passes it to the next block. One Indian maker lists capstans from 300 to 560 mm, inlet wire from 1.6 to 5.5 mm, finished wire from 0.6 to 4.0 mm, speeds from 5 to 15 m/s and an AC frequency converter drive. It is aimed at stainless steel and high-carbon wire with high torsion values, as spring grades need.
Wet drawing cone machine
In a wet machine the dies and wire run in liquid lubricant and the wire winds around cones. One maker's wet lines use two to six cones and from 9 to 28 dies, with high-pressure die lubrication, lubricant level and temperature controls, and a water-cooled haul-off capstan and final die. They draw bare and plated carbon steel, stainless steel and alloy wire, for uses such as welding wire and tyre cord. Some models have independently motorised cones.
Copper and aluminium rod breakdown machine
A multi-die machine that takes copper or aluminium rod down to wire. One maker's compact model takes copper rod up to 8 mm and aluminium rod up to 9.5 mm, delivers 0.8 to 5.0 mm wire at up to 36 m/s, and uses multi-motor control. Its largest model takes rod up to 24 mm. Output across the range is up to 9 tons per hour with four annealed wires of 1.80 mm. Choose it when you start from rod.
Intermediate and fine copper wire drawing machine
A machine that draws copper wire to intermediate and fine sizes. One maker's intermediate series takes up to 2.60 mm hard copper or 3.50 mm soft copper and delivers 0.15 to 2.00 mm wire; its fine series is for bare and electroplated copper with an optional integrated annealer. The maker describes annealing in a self-generating steam atmosphere, with spray or spray and submerged lubrication. Choose it for fine conductor wire.
What to specify when buying a wire drawing machine
A clear wire drawing machine specification gets you comparable offers and a faster meeting. Share these points with diipl and we match them to the right manufacturer.
| What to specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Wire material and rod grade | Say whether you draw mild, medium or high carbon steel, stainless or alloy steel, copper or aluminium. The wire, dies, cooling lubricant and drawing machine act together on the result, so the builder needs your exact grade. |
| Rod size in and wire size out | State the thickest rod you will feed and the finest wire you will make. One Indian maker lists straight-line machines for wire from 0.5 to 16 mm and inverted vertical machines for 5 to 36 mm. |
| Capstan (block) diameter | Ask for the diameter of every block. One straight-line range offers capstans from 300 to 900 mm and one inverted vertical range offers blocks from 610 to 1200 mm, so match the size to your wire. |
| Line speed at the last block | Give the speed you need in metres per second. One straight-line range runs up to 22 m/s and one twist-free range runs from 5 to 15 m/s, so the possible speed depends on the machine type. |
| Area reduction per die and number of dies | A general reference puts area reduction at about 15 to 25 percent per pass for small wire and 20 to 45 percent for larger wire. Ask for the pass schedule that takes your rod to the finished size. |
| Drive on each capstan | One straight-line range gives every capstan its own AC motor with an inverter, with dancer arms and a PLC regulating drafts and speeds. Ask what drive each block has and what the line does on a wire break. |
| Slip or non-slip, and how tension is held | A paper on rod breakdown machines says a separate motor on each capstan nearly removes the slip of traditional gear-driven machines. Ask whether your machine is slip or non-slip and how tension is controlled. |
| Dancer or sensor arm for fine wire | One straight-line range says its dancer-control version is particularly suitable for wire below 4 mm and is required for wire below 1.5 mm. If you draw fine steel wire, ask for dancer control. |
| Lubrication and cooling, dry or wet | In dry drawing the wire passes through a container of lubricant that coats it; in wet drawing the dies and wire are completely immersed. Ask how lubricant is cooled, cleaned and topped up, and how die boxes are cooled. |
| Die material and spares | Dies are typically tool steel, tungsten carbide or diamond, and a single crystal diamond die is used for very fine wire. Ask which die material comes for each size, get the die list, and ask who regrinds dies. |
| Capstan surface and hardness | Capstans carry the pulling load. One straight-line range uses inclined forged steel capstans heat-treated to HRC62, and one wet cone range uses black ceramic capstans. Ask for the material, hardness and expected wear life of yours. |
| In-line annealer, resistance or inductive | Recrystallising copper wire can be done by resistance annealing or inductive annealing. Ask whether an annealer sits in the line, which method it uses, and what atmosphere and cooling it needs for your wire. |
| Pay-off and take-up | State how rod arrives and wire leaves: coils, spools, carriers or a turntable. An inverted bull block coils onto a turntable and is offered above ground or with a pit, which changes your floor work. |
| Stopping devices and guards | One North American state order asks for a stopping device that shuts a block down if an operator is caught, and a pressure device along a continuous frame that starts stopping the machine at once. Ask what your builder fits. |

HSN code and ITC-HS code for wire drawing machines
Wire drawing machines are classified under ITC-HS 84631010 (wire and metal ribbon drawing machines), within HS subheading 846310 (machine-tools; for working metal, sintered metal carbides or cermets, without removing material, draw-benches for bars, tubes, profiles, wire or the like). The 6-digit subheading is the same in every country that uses the Harmonized System; the 8-digit ITC-HS line is the one India files.
In India the GST HSN code and the export ITC-HS code come from the same nomenclature. A GST invoice needs only the first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover; the export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit ITC-HS line. The classification is shown here; the applicable GST rate is not. Official source.

Your opportunity
Indian wire drawing machine makers already ship this line abroad. diipl finds the markets where your machine can win and generates the verified buyers there.
A classification is a fact any lookup can give you. The correct code still does not tell you which countries are buying wire drawing machines right now, what duty each of them charges on the Indian line, or whether that demand is growing or fading. Those answers come from trade data, not from a code table, and they decide whether a market is worth entering. diipl's free Market Research Report answers them for your machine.

Buying a wire drawing machine in India
- The GST invoice should name the machine type and model, the number of blocks, and list the dies, die boxes, pointing machine, pay-off and take-up supplied, so every part you paid for is on paper.
- Ask the builder to name the rod diameters and grades the line is rated for, and to prove it with your own rod before you sign off.
- Put installation and commissioning in the contract: floor and foundation, levelling of the blocks, motor and inverter connection, cooling water and lubricant circuits, and a trial run at rated speed. A machine that coils over a pit needs the pit ready before delivery.
- Book operator training on site covering threading and pointing the wire, changing dies, setting speed and draft, and what to do on a wire break.
- Keep spare dies, capstan sleeves, bearings, belts and inverter parts in stock, and agree a service response time. Dies wear first, so ask who regrinds or replaces them.
- Plan delivery: heavy frames and blocks need a crane and forklift for unloading, and you should ask for the weight and layout drawing and the delivery time in writing before you order.
Buying from Indian wire drawing machine exporters
- Buyers in the European Union expect a machine that carries the CE mark, with a declaration of conformity and instructions for use. Ask how the blocks, the nips between wire and pulleys, the die boxes and the zone where a broken wire can whip are guarded.
- Buyers in North America may check the line against workplace safety rules for drawing machines, which can call for stopping devices on blocks and along the operating side of a continuous frame. Ask the importer which rules cover the site.
- Give your site voltage, phases and frequency in words so the block motors, inverters and cooling pumps are built to match, and mention site temperature and cooling water quality.
- Send a rod sample or rod grade sheet and your list of wire sizes before the order, because dies are made to your sizes. Ask for a witnessed trial draw on your own rod, by video or in person, before dispatch.
- Ask for a spare dies and wear parts list for the first period of running, and a remote support plan for the PLC and drives.
- Agree the Incoterm and who unloads and places the frames and blocks. Ask for a packing list that matches machine parts to crates, and a Certificate of Origin if your import rules call for one.
Standards and certifications for wire drawing machines
Wire Drawing Machines for each market must meet that market's rules. diipl confirms the certifications your market needs before any meeting. Each requirement below links to its official source.
| Indian standard or rule | What it covers | Official source |
|---|---|---|
| IS 16504 (Part 1):2019Safety of Machinery - Electrical Equipment of Machines Part 1 General Requirements (First Revision) | A general standard for the electrical equipment of machines, identical under dual numbering with IEC 60204-1:2016. It is not written for wire drawing machines. Ask whether the panel, motors, inverters and wiring of a line with a drive on every block follow it. | View source |
| IS 16819:2018Safety of machinery - General principles for design - Risk assessment and risk reduction | Identical under dual numbering with ISO 12100:2010. It is not written for wire drawing machines. A builder can use it to assess hazards such as rotating blocks and wire nips and show how each one is guarded. | View source |
| IS 8130:2013Conductors for insulated electric cables and flexible cords - Specification (Second Revision) | A specification for conductors of insulated electric cables and flexible cords. It concerns the finished conductor wire, not the machine. If you draw cable conductor, ask for a trial draw measured against the conductor standard your cables follow. | View source |
| Export requirement | Region | What it means | Official source |
|---|---|---|---|
| CE marking route for a wire drawing machine | European Union | Wire drawing machines are not among the higher-risk categories listed in Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2023/1230. The maker still has to complete the conformity procedure before affixing CE marking. Ask to see the declaration of conformity and instructions, and how blocks, nips and wire-break zones are guarded. | View source |
| Stopping devices on blocks and drawing frames | North America | One state workplace safety order for wire drawing machines asks for a stopping device on blocks that shuts the block down if an operator is caught, and a device along the operating side of a continuous drawing frame that starts stopping the machine at once. Ask the importer whether its site is covered. | View source |

Wire Drawing Machine: frequently asked questions
Who makes wire drawing machines in India?
diipl keeps maker names private. Describe your wire (steel, copper or aluminium), the rod you start with, the finished sizes and the speed you want. diipl then shortlists a builder whose GSTIN is verified and whose works have been audited, including a trial draw on rod like yours and a look at the blocks, dies and drives. The builder's Importer Exporter Code and the safety papers your market needs are checked before a meeting is fixed.
Which block diameter, line speed and number of dies should I ask for?
Start from your wire material, rod size and finished size. One Indian maker lists straight-line machines with capstans from 300 to 900 mm drawing wire from 0.5 to 16 mm at up to 22 m/s, and inverted vertical machines for 5 to 36 mm wire. Each die removes only part of the cross-section, so the die count follows from rod and finished size. Also state the drive, lubrication and take-up.
Which standards or certifications apply to wire drawing machines?
General machinery standards can be used to assess safety. The electrical equipment can be checked against IS 16504 (Part 1):2019, the Indian version of the international standard for the electrical equipment of machines, and a risk assessment standard can show how rotating blocks and wire nips are guarded. Export buyers add their own rules, such as CE marking for the European Union. diipl checks the papers your market asks for.
What is the HSN code for wire drawing machines?
Wire Drawing Machines are classified under ITC-HS 84631010 (wire and metal ribbon drawing machines), within HS subheading 846310. The export shipping bill carries this full 8-digit line; a GST invoice needs only its first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover. Confirm the 8-digit line against your exact machine before you file.
Can Indian manufacturers export wire drawing machines?
Yes, if the line meets the buyer's region. Overseas buyers can ask for a CE-marked machine with a declaration of conformity for the European Union, stopping devices on blocks for some North American workplaces, and a match to local voltage and frequency. They also ask for a trial draw on their own rod, a die and spares list, and remote help with drives and controls. diipl checks the maker's Importer Exporter Code before a meeting.
Which industries buy wire drawing machines?
Steel wire mills, cold heading wire drawers for fastener makers, weld-mesh and reinforcing wire makers, makers of strand wire for pre-stressed concrete used in roads, bridges and flyovers, spring and stainless wire makers, welding wire makers, and copper and aluminium conductor makers for cables. Any plant that starts from rod and needs thinner wire is a likely buyer.
I manufacture wire drawing machines. How do I find verified buyers?
diipl first splits demand by the kind of line, since a steel wire mill, a fastener wire drawer and a copper cable plant need very different machines: straight-line, bull block, rod breakdown or fine wire. Outreach then goes to the right buyer groups and regions, and each buyer's real requirement, budget, decision maker and timing are checked before a meeting is arranged with you. Your name and contact details stay private.
What is the difference between slip and non-slip wire drawing machines?
On a non-slip machine the surface speed of each capstan matches the speed of the wire, so there is no sliding. On a slip type the capstan runs at a different speed from the wire on purpose. A patent on slip-type drawing says this can make the machine simple and compact and give a smooth surface, but that a poorly controlled speed difference can damage the wire surface, break the wire or wear dies early. Ask which type is offered and how speed is controlled.
Do I need an annealer on my wire drawing line?
It depends on how far you draw. A general reference says intermediate anneals are often required to counter the effects of cold working and to allow further drawing, and that a reduction in area greater than 50 percent may call for an intermediate anneal. A final anneal can raise ductility and electrical conductivity. Tell the builder your total reduction and whether the wire is for electrical use, then ask if an in-line annealer is needed.
Should I choose a dry or a wet drawing machine?
In dry drawing the wire passes through a container of lubricant that coats its surface. In wet drawing the dies and wire are completely immersed in lubricant. Pick by your wire material, surface finish and speed, and ask what lubricant handling, cooling and cleaning each type needs in your plant. Ask the builder to show similar wire made on the type offered.
How many dies and blocks does a wire drawing machine need?
Each die removes only part of the cross-section. A general reference puts area reduction per pass at about 15 to 25 percent for small wire and 20 to 45 percent for larger wire, and says intermediate annealing is often needed. The number of dies and blocks therefore follows from your rod size, finished size and wire material. Give the builder all three and ask to see the pass schedule.
