How to verify an Indian manufacturer before sourcing
Before placing an order with any Indian manufacturer, apply four sequential verification gates. Gate 1 — GSTIN: confirm the 15-character GST registration is active and verified against the official GST Gov. Portal. Gate 2 — IEC: verify the Import-Export Code issued by DGFT is valid and non-expired; IEC is mandatory for legal exports from India. Gate 3 — Capacity audit: confirm actual manufacturing through factory photographs, video walkthroughs, or past shipment volumes — not self-declared claims. Gate 4 — Track record: check ICEGATE customs filings for prior export shipments to destinations similar to yours. A supplier clearing all four gates is a legitimate manufacturer with operational proof. Clearing only one or two is a yellow flag — likely a trading-house broker, a recent registrant, or a shell company. This is the same 4-gate method diipl applies to every Indian manufacturer we introduce to international buyers.
The 4 gates, in detail
Gate 1 — GSTIN verified via GST Gov. Portal
Every Indian business entity operating legally carries a 15-character GSTIN. We verify the GSTIN directly against the official GST Gov. Portal and ensure the registration is active — not cancelled, not suspended, not fabricated.
Gate 2 — IEC valid via DGFT
The Import-Export Code is a 10-digit identifier issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade. Without a valid IEC, a company legally cannot export from India. Verify it on the DGFT portal — confirm the IEC is active, non-suspended, and the registered name matches the supplier's stated company name.
Gate 3 — Manufacturing capacity audit
Request recent factory photographs with timestamps, a live video walkthrough of the production line, or documented shipment volumes from past quarters. A real manufacturer provides all three without hesitation. A broker typically stalls or offers a stock-image response.
Gate 4 — ICEGATE export track record
India's Customs EDI gateway (ICEGATE) records every export shipment filed. A paid trade-data service or direct customs-broker relationship can confirm whether the supplier has previously exported similar products to destinations similar to yours. No track record is a yellow flag — especially for higher-value orders.
Frequently asked
Why is verifying an Indian manufacturer harder than a Chinese one?
India's MSME manufacturing base is fragmented across tens of thousands of small factories, and the gap between a genuine manufacturer and a trading-house broker is often invisible on an online listing. A company with a valid GSTIN might still be a reseller who quotes you a factory price + commission. A supplier with IEC might have registered the code for a single past shipment and never manufactured anything. And shell GSTINs — companies registered purely for GST input-tax benefits with no actual operations — are a real risk without on-ground verification. Four gates catch all three failure modes.
What are the 4 gates diipl uses to verify Indian manufacturers?
Gate 1 is GSTIN: the supplier's GST registration must be active and verified against the official GST Gov. Portal. Gate 2 is IEC: their Import-Export Code issued by DGFT must be valid and non-expired. Gate 3 is capacity audit: we confirm actual manufacturing capacity through factory visits, photographs, or past export data volumes — not self-declared claims. Gate 4 is track record: we check ICEGATE customs filings to confirm the supplier has real export shipments to destinations similar to yours. A supplier must clear all four to enter our matched-meeting pool.
Can I run these checks myself as an importer?
Yes, partially. GSTIN verification is public — any 15-character GSTIN can be checked directly on the official GST Gov. Portal. IEC status is searchable on the DGFT website. Capacity audit requires on-ground access (factory visit or a trusted in-country partner). ICEGATE track record requires either a paid trade-data service or direct customs-broker relationships. Most international importers can realistically do Gate 1 and Gate 2 on their own; Gates 3 and 4 are where diipl adds the operational moat that individual importers can't replicate cheaply.
