What is a commercial industrial blower and fan?

An industrial blower or fan moves a large volume of air or gas through a plant at low to moderate pressure. A bladed impeller turns inside a casing, driven by an electric motor either directly or through belts. In a centrifugal machine the air is thrown outward and leaves at right angles to the shaft. In an axial machine it travels along the shaft. A rotary lobe blower works differently: two meshing lobes trap air and carry it from inlet to outlet. Plants use these machines for ventilation, boiler draft, spot cooling, pneumatic conveying and aeration. The pressure a machine must work against decides whether it is sold as a fan, a blower or a compressor.

This page covers motor-driven blowers and fans for factories, plants and commercial buildings; household fans and home-use blowers are not covered.

How diipl verifies industrial blower and fan manufacturers

diipl checks every industrial blower and fan manufacturer before a buyer meets them. Every seller is GSTIN verified and capacity audited. IEC and the certifications your product and market need (ISO, CE, REACH, BIS) are confirmed before any meeting; Certificate of Origin and EIC inspection are arranged per shipment where required.

For industrial blower and fans, the capacity audit also covers:

  • A run of the finished machine at rated speed on a test stand, with airflow and pressure read at several points on the throttle range and set against the maker's published curve
  • Impeller balance and welds: a balancing record for the impeller on the order, sound welds at the blade roots and back plate, and a quiet, cool run of shaft and bearings
  • Casing and duct connections built to the drawing, with flange faces flat, the inlet cone or bell mouth fitted and corrosion protection applied where the order calls for it
  • Guards over the inlet, outlet and exposed drive, a rating plate showing size, rated speed and direction of rotation, and a motor plate that matches the order
  • For rotary lobe blowers: lobe and casing clearances, timing gears and oil seals checked, and a loaded run watching outlet temperature and pulsation

We match your requirement to a manufacturer that has passed these checks and arrange a direct meeting.

Types of industrial blower and fans we cover

Indian industrial blower and fan manufacturers on the diipl bench build these commercial and industrial types.

TypeTypical buyers
Radial-blade centrifugal fanPlants that move dusty, hot or wet air, or carry light solids with the air, such as wood and metal-working units.
Backward-inclined centrifugal fanBoiler houses and plants with a clean air supply and long running hours.
Axial flow fan, tube axial and vane axialPlants that need large volumes of fairly clean air moved at steady flow, as in exhaust, ventilation or boiler induced draft.
Propeller-type exhaust and ventilating fanFactories, warehouses and sheds that need general ventilation or exhaust.
Rotary lobe (roots-type) blowerPlants that convey bulk solids by air and buyers who need oil-free air at modest pressure.
Industrial cooling fan (man cooler)Workshops and furnace areas that need cooling air blown toward hot work areas.

Radial-blade centrifugal fan

A centrifugal fan with flat, radial blades, driven by an electric motor directly or through belts. The flat shape limits build-up, so it handles dust, wood chips and metal scrap, and it can be ruggedly built and is often used in hot air. It gives low to medium airflow at high pressure. Radial-tip versions, for small particles and moist air, reach efficiencies up to 75 percent. Choose it when the air carries solids or heat.

Backward-inclined centrifugal fan

Blades tilt away from the direction of rotation and come in flat, curved and airfoil shapes. Airfoil blades are the most efficient, above 85 percent, and the type is often used for forced draft on a relatively clean airstream. Motor load falls off at high flow, so the motor is less likely to overload. Dust or moisture builds up on the blades and thin blades erode, so keep this type for clean air.

Axial flow fan, tube axial and vane axial

Air moves along the shaft. A tube axial fan is a propeller inside a cylinder and suits medium pressure with high airflow. A vane axial fan adds outlet vanes that turn air speed into pressure; with airfoil blades and tight clearances it reaches efficiencies up to 85 percent, and it is often fitted with pitch-adjustable blades. Axial fans are compact and can run in reverse for supply or exhaust, but they stall at low flow.

Propeller-type exhaust and ventilating fan

The simplest axial fan: a propeller turned by a motor, often used for rooftop ventilation. It moves a high volume of air at low pressure, is not meant for long ductwork and has low efficiency, but it is simple to build. Its power demand falls as airflow rises. Choose it for open-air or short-path exhaust, not for ducted systems.

Rotary lobe (roots-type) blower

A positive displacement machine: a pair of meshing lobes traps air and carries it from inlet to outlet, so it moves a large volume of air against a modest pressure difference. No oil is present on the pumping surfaces. It is common in pneumatic conveying of bulk solids. Air leaves in pulses, so pulsation noise can travel downstream; ask how the maker handles the outlet side.

Industrial cooling fan (man cooler)

A free-air fan with two or more propeller-type blades, driven directly by an electric motor, giving high air speed along the axis. It stands on a pedestal, is mounted on a bracket or sits in a tubular casing, and blows air toward hot areas such as furnaces. The Indian standard covers non-oscillating fans in sizes from 450 to 1200 mm for single-phase or three-phase supply.

What to specify when buying an industrial blower and fan

A clear industrial blower and fan specification gets you comparable offers and a faster meeting. Share these points with diipl and we match them to the right manufacturer.

What to specifyWhy it matters
Airflow at the duty point (cubic metres per hour)The Indian centrifugal fan standard expresses inlet volume in cubic metres per hour and calls the inlet volume at a stated pressure the fan duty. Give one duty point and say how much margin, if any, you added.
Pressure at that airflow, static or totalThe Indian standard defines fan static pressure and fan total pressure as separate quantities. Ask every maker to state the pressure on the same basis, or the offers cannot be compared.
Fan type and blade shapeRadial blades suit dust and heat. Backward-inclined airfoil blades exceed 85 percent efficiency on clean air. Forward-curved fans reach 55 to 65 percent and suit clean, low-pressure duties. Axial fans suit large volumes of cleaner air.
Air condition: temperature, moisture, dust, corrosive or flammable contentTemperature sets speed limits and material choice because strength falls with heat. Dust and moisture decide blade shape. Corrosive air calls for coatings, reinforced plastic or alloys, and possibly a shaft seal.
Efficiency and the basis it is stated onTotal efficiency uses total pressure and static efficiency uses static pressure. Ask which is stated and at what point on the curve; running near the point of highest efficiency lowers wear, bearing load and noise.
Drive: direct, belt or gear, and the fan speedDirect drive is more efficient, compact and low in upkeep but fixes fan speed at motor speed. Belts allow other speeds but need alignment and tension checks. Gear drives are rarer. Tell the maker the speed you want.
Motor rating, supply and enclosureThe Indian centrifugal fan standard prefers 230 or 240 volts single-phase and 400 or 415 volts three-phase at 50 hertz, with a totally enclosed motor or an SPDP motor. State your supply and the enclosure your air needs.
Flow control methodDampers push the fan away from peak efficiency. Inlet vanes suit demand between 80 and 100 percent of full flow. Speed drives save most but can destabilise axial and some centrifugal fans if slowed too far.
Noise limit and measuring distanceThe Indian centrifugal fan standard leaves noise limits to agreement between maker and purchaser: limits depend on where the fan is installed and no agreed method of measuring noise existed. Write a limit and the measuring distance into the order.
Materials, coatings and spark resistanceIn flammable air, fans are usually built from nonferrous alloys, and rotating parts are grounded, to limit sparks. For corrosive air the material is chosen to resist attack. State the hazard at enquiry.
Guards, rating plate and markingThe Indian standard asks for guards on the inlet, outlet or both, made available on request, and for each fan to be marked with its size, rated speed, direction of rotation and air delivery at stated duty. Ask for both with the offer.
Impeller balance and vibrationThe axial fan standard asks for well-balanced blades fixed so they do not loosen. Dust build-up later causes imbalance, so ask for a balancing record and for vibration readings at commissioning.
Performance curve and test basisThe Indian standard draws the fan curve from not less than three test points and sets a system resistance line through the duty point, where pressure rises with the square of airflow. Ask for the curve and its test basis.
For rotary lobe blowers: pressure rise and pulsationA lobe blower suits a large volume across a modest pressure rise, and its output arrives in pulses. State the pressure difference at the outlet and ask how pulsation and noise are controlled downstream.

HSN code and ITC-HS code for industrial blower and fans

Industrial blower and fans are classified under ITC-HS 84145930 (industrial fans and blowers), within HS subheading 841459 (fans; n.e.c. in item no. 8414.51). The 6-digit subheading is the same in every country that uses the Harmonized System; the 8-digit ITC-HS line is the one India files.

Some machines on this page use a different line:

  • 84148019 (other, within subheading 841480: pumps and compressors; for air, vacuum or gas, n.e.c. in heading no. 8414) when the machine is a rotary lobe (Roots type) blower and it is treated as a gas compressor, which some national tariffs do for Roots type machines and which elsewhere turns on whether the pressure the machine builds is high enough for a compressor.

Some customs rulings treat a rotary lobe (Roots type) blower as a fan and some national tariffs treat it as a gas compressor, and no Indian or World Customs Organization text we could confirm settles it, so confirm it before you file.

In India the GST HSN code and the export ITC-HS code come from the same nomenclature. A GST invoice needs only the first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover; the export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit ITC-HS line. The classification is shown here; the applicable GST rate is not. Official source.

Your opportunity

Indian industrial blower and fan makers already ship this line abroad. diipl finds the markets where your machine can win and generates the verified buyers there.

A classification is a fact any lookup can give you. The correct code still does not tell you which countries are buying industrial blower and fans right now, what duty each of them charges on the Indian line, or whether that demand is growing or fading. Those answers come from trade data, not from a code table, and they decide whether a market is worth entering. diipl's free Market Research Report answers them for your machine.

Buying an industrial blower and fan in India

  • Insist on a GST invoice naming the model, impeller type, rated airflow and pressure and motor rating, and get the performance curve and warranty in writing with the offer.
  • Fix the foundation or support frame, the duct connections and the cable route before delivery. Keep straight duct before and after the fan, because bends close to the fan inlet or outlet cut the airflow you actually receive.
  • Settle the starting method with the maker. A large impeller takes time to reach speed and a direct start draws a heavy current, so a soft starter or variable speed drive may be needed.
  • Ask the maker to commission the machine: direction of rotation, belt alignment and tension, bearing lubrication, guards in place and a vibration reading on the first run.
  • Get a spares list covering belts, bearings, a shaft seal kit and a spare impeller or wear liners for dusty duty, and agree how fast each can be supplied.
  • Plan routine care from the start: belts and bearings are checked often, and fans in dusty or damp air need blade cleaning because build-up unbalances the impeller.

Buying from Indian industrial blower and fan exporters

  • Give the maker your mains voltage, frequency and phase, and the motor efficiency or enclosure rules of your region, so the motor is wound and rated for your site.
  • For the European Union, ask whether the fan falls in the ecodesign range and, if so, for the efficiency and part-load data that go with it. Equipment for explosive atmospheres follows a separate directive and is tested before it carries the CE mark.
  • Name any hazardous zone, flammable dust or corrosive gas at enquiry, because impeller material, spark resistance, motor and seals all depend on it.
  • Ask for a performance curve measured on a test airway with the rating basis stated, total or static pressure and air density, so you can compare offers from different makers on one basis.
  • Agree the Incoterm, and ask for the packed size and weight of the casing, impeller and motor and how the shaft and bearings are protected for sea freight. Have a Certificate of Origin prepared if your customs require one.
  • Order a first set of belts, bearings and a shaft seal kit with the fan and agree remote video support for commissioning in your plant.

Industrial Blower and Fan: frequently asked questions

Who makes industrial blowers and fans in India?

Maker names stay private at diipl. Share your duty (airflow, pressure, air condition and drive type) and diipl puts forward an Indian maker with a checked GSTIN and an audited factory. For blowers and fans the audit means watching a finished unit run at rated speed with airflow and pressure measured, and checking impeller balance and blade welds. diipl also confirms the maker's Importer Exporter Code and the approvals your market needs.

Which airflow, pressure and drive details should I give a blower or fan maker?

Give the airflow in cubic metres per hour at one duty point and the pressure at that point, and say whether the pressure is static or total. Describe the air: temperature, moisture, dust and any corrosive or flammable content. Add your supply voltage, the drive you prefer (direct or belt), the flow control you want (damper, inlet vane or speed drive) and a noise limit.

Which standards or certifications apply to industrial blowers and fans?

BIS publishes IS 4894 for centrifugal fans, IS 3588 for electric axial flow fans, IS 2312 for propeller type ventilating fans and IS 6272 for industrial cooling fans. These cover fans, not rotary lobe blowers, so ask a lobe blower maker which test code the unit follows. Fans for mines and hazardous atmospheres may need extra requirements.

What is the HSN code for industrial blower and fans?

Industrial Blower and Fans are classified under ITC-HS 84145930 (industrial fans and blowers), within HS subheading 841459. Some related machines use a different line: 84148019 when the machine is a rotary lobe (Roots type) blower and it is treated as a gas compressor, which some national tariffs do for Roots type machines and which elsewhere turns on whether the pressure the machine builds is high enough for a compressor. Some customs rulings treat a rotary lobe (Roots type) blower as a fan and some national tariffs treat it as a gas compressor, and no Indian or World Customs Organization text we could confirm settles it, so confirm it before you file. The export shipping bill carries this full 8-digit line; a GST invoice needs only its first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover. Confirm the 8-digit line against your exact machine before you file.

Can Indian manufacturers export industrial blowers and fans?

Yes, and the paperwork depends on the machine. Axial, centrifugal, cross flow and mixed flow fans driven by a motor between 125 W and 500 kW and sold into the European Union fall under ecodesign Regulation (EU) 2024/1834 unless an exclusion applies; it covers efficiency, part-load data and spare parts. A fan or blower working in a gas or dust hazard zone follows a separate explosive-atmosphere directive. For any region, give the maker your supply voltage, frequency and site conditions before the motor is chosen.

Which industries buy industrial blowers and fans?

Boiler houses and power units buy forced-draft and induced-draft fans. Workshops and factories buy ventilation, exhaust and spot-cooling fans. Bulk-handling plants buy blowers to carry powder, grain or granules through pipes. Wastewater plants buy low pressure blowers to put air into aeration tanks. Plastics and electronics units buy fans to keep clean air flowing to production areas.

I make blowers and fans. How do I find verified buyers?

diipl studies which plants and regions need your kind of machine, for example boiler houses for draft fans or treatment plants for aeration blowers, and approaches them through its own campaigns. Before any introduction, diipl confirms that the buyer has a genuine requirement, funds, a decision maker and a delivery date. Nothing about your company goes public until you agree to a meeting.

How do I choose between a centrifugal and an axial fan?

Centrifugal fans are the most commonly used industrial fan. They can build high pressure and cope with dirty, hot or wet air. Axial fans are compact and light and suit large volumes of cleaner air, and they can run in reverse for supply or exhaust. The two types overlap in pressure, so the condition of the air usually decides. Axial fans stall at low flow, so they suit steady duties.

When should I choose a rotary lobe blower instead of a centrifugal blower?

A rotary lobe blower carries trapped pockets of air from inlet to outlet, so it suits a large volume of air against a modest pressure rise, as in pneumatic conveying, and it has no oil on the pumping surfaces. Its air arrives in pulses, so ask about outlet silencing and piping. Ask the maker for the pressure difference the unit is rated for.

Can I run an industrial fan on a variable speed drive, and what if the fan is oversized?

Speed control is the most efficient way to vary flow, and it also gives a soft start. But slowing a fan too far can make axial and some centrifugal types unstable, and some speeds cause resonance, so ask the maker which speeds to avoid. An oversized fan draws more power, is noisier and may work in an unstable region, so size it from a real duty point.

How often should belts and bearings on an industrial fan be checked?

Belts are usually the most maintenance-intensive part of a belt-driven fan, so check tension and alignment often and replace a multiple-belt set together. Lubricate bearings to the maker's instructions; for high-speed fans in severe environments this can be weekly or more often. Clean blades regularly in dusty or damp air, because uneven build-up causes imbalance.
