What is a commercial weighbridge?

A weighbridge is a large platform scale that weighs a whole truck, tanker or rail wagon together with its load. The vehicle is weighed empty and again loaded, and the difference is the weight of the goods. An electronic weighbridge rests its platform on several load cells. Each load cell has strain gauges, and its electrical signal changes as the load presses on it. Electronics add up the signals and an indicator shows the weight. Many sites link the indicator to a PC with software that prints tickets and keeps records. Factories, mines, ports and warehouses use weighbridges to record goods moving in and out.

This page covers commercial and industrial weighbridges for trucks, tankers and rail wagons; small platform, table-top and shop scales are not covered.

How diipl verifies weighbridge manufacturers

diipl checks every weighbridge manufacturer before a buyer meets them. Every seller is GSTIN verified and capacity audited. IEC and the certifications your product and market need (ISO, CE, REACH, BIS) are confirmed before any meeting; Certificate of Origin and EIC inspection are arranged per shipment where required.

For weighbridges, the capacity audit also covers:

  • Fabrication of the steel platform on the shop floor: cutting, welding and surface treatment of girders and deck plates
  • A trial assembly or test weighing with certified test weights on a bridge built in the factory
  • Load cell stock and approval papers: the class, rating and serial numbers on the cells, and the model approval certificate, match the model offered
  • An indicator and software set up and working, including the sealing point and the calibration lock
  • Records of earlier installations and verification certificates for bridges the maker has commissioned

We match your requirement to a manufacturer that has passed these checks and arrange a direct meeting.

Types of weighbridges we cover

Indian weighbridge manufacturers on the diipl bench build these commercial and industrial types.

TypeTypical buyers
Pit-type road weighbridgePlants, mines and yards with heavy truck traffic and limited room for ramps
Pitless (surface-mounted) road weighbridgeSites where digging a pit is difficult or not wanted
Portable weighbridgeContractors and operators with temporary or moving sites
Rail weighbridgePlants and terminals with their own rail sidings that load or unload wagons
In-motion rail weighbridgePlants and terminals with heavy wagon traffic that need wagon weights without stopping trains

Pit-type road weighbridge

The platform and weighing equipment sit in a pit, so the weighing surface is level with the road and trucks drive straight on. No approach ramps are needed, which saves space on a crowded site. The trade-off is civil work: the pit and its foundation must be built before the platform is placed. Choose it for busy gates and tight layouts.

Pitless (surface-mounted) road weighbridge

The scale is mounted on the surface, with a short ramp up to the platform and the weighing equipment underneath. It needs no pit, so the site work is lighter, but you need room for the ramps. Choose it when digging a pit is not practical.

Portable weighbridge

A portable weighbridge uses a lower frame that can be placed on ground such as dirt, and it is made to be moved between sites. It suits temporary sites and work fronts that change. For trade weighing, still ask for the approval mark and the certificate that cover the exact model.

Rail weighbridge

A rail weighbridge weighs rolling stock such as wagons, empty or loaded. Sensors are built into the track section, and scale test cars of known weight are used to calibrate it. Choose it for sidings, plants and loading points where wagons are loaded or unloaded and the goods must be weighed. The track needs clear approach and departure lengths.

In-motion rail weighbridge

It weighs wagons while they move over the track, so a train does not need to stop. Main-line systems weigh whole coupled trains at line speed. Yard systems weigh single uncoupled wagons at lower speed and with higher accuracy. Weighing in motion is generally less accurate than weighing a stopped wagon, so check the accuracy you need.

What to specify when buying a weighbridge

A clear weighbridge specification gets you comparable offers and a faster meeting. Share these points with diipl and we match them to the right manufacturer.

What to specifyWhy it matters
Rated capacityChoose a capacity above your heaviest loaded vehicle. One approved model lists 40000 kg, and its approval also covers same-series instruments by the same maker from above 5 tonnes up to 150 tonnes.
Axle load ratingA road bridge is rated for the load on an axle group. One heavy-duty range lists a dual tandem axle rating of 42 or 50 tonnes for its 50 or 60 tonne sizes. Give the maker your heaviest axle group.
Platform length, width and modulesOne maker's standard range lists platform lengths from 6 to 24 metres in 3 metre width, in modules 4.5 to 9 metres long, for pit or surface mounting. Share your longest vehicle and lane width before a drawing is made.
Load cell count and layoutOne maker's sheet puts four load cells under the first module and two more under each added module, so a 24 metre bridge has ten. Ask for the count and layout, and check the cells against the drawing.
Load cell class and ratingAn approved 40000 kg model lists six strain gauge load cells of class C3, each rated 30000 kg. Ask for the class, rating and serial numbers of the cells in your bridge, and check them against the approval papers.
Accuracy class, verification scale interval and minimum capacityOne approved 40000 kg model is medium accuracy, class III, with a 10 kg verification scale interval and a 200 kg minimum capacity. These set how finely the bridge reads and is verified. Ask for all three in writing.
Model approval mark and certificateAn approved model's mark carries IND, the last two digits of the year, a laboratory code and a model code, and is fixed on each instrument of that model. Ask for the certificate and check the mark matches.
Pit-type or surface-mounted layout and foundationA pit-type bridge sits level with the road. A surface-mounted one has a ramp up to the platform. Weighbridges are usually fixed on a concrete foundation, so ask for the pit or foundation drawing and who builds it.
Deck materialMakers offer both steel deck and concrete deck designs. Ask which suits your vehicle mix, site conditions and delivery route, and what each needs for maintenance.
Indicator, display and ticket printingOne approved model uses an LED display for weight and an LCD for date, time and other information. Ask for a display the driver can read from the cab, a ticket printer or PC link, and how tare is set.
Sealing point and calibration lockApproval certificates show a sealing wire passed through holes in the body with a seal at its end, and a switch on the board that blocks outside calibration. Ask where the seal goes and who may break it.
Software, records and unmanned weighingOne maker's indicator runs built-in or PC-based software for vehicle weighing and weight records, with serial and Ethernet links. An optional unmanned system adds RFID readers, traffic lights and sensors. Decide which records and gate steps you need.
Power supply and backupOne approved model lists a 230 V, 50 Hz AC supply. Ask what the indicator and PC need on your site, and whether a backup keeps weighing going through a power cut.
First verification and re-verificationOne state department lists a one year validity for the verification certificate of weighbridges, and an Assistant Controller of Legal Metrology verifies them. Ask who books the first visit and who tracks the next due date.

HSN code and ITC-HS code for weighbridges

Weighbridges are classified under ITC-HS 84238900 (other), within HS subheading 842389 (weighing machines; other than personal, conveyor or constant weight scales, having a maximum weighing capacity exceeding 5000kg). The 6-digit subheading is the same in every country that uses the Harmonized System; the 8-digit ITC-HS line is the one India files.

Some machines on this page use a different line:

  • 84238290 (other, within subheading 842382: weighing machines; other than personal, conveyor or constant weight scales, having a maximum weighing capacity exceeding 30kg but not exceeding 5000kg) when the maximum weighing capacity of the machine is five tonnes or less and it is not a beam scale.

In India the GST HSN code and the export ITC-HS code come from the same nomenclature. A GST invoice needs only the first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover; the export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit ITC-HS line. The classification is shown here; the applicable GST rate is not. Official source.

A classification is a fact any lookup can give you. The correct code still does not tell you which countries are buying weighbridges right now, what duty each of them charges on the Indian line, or whether that demand is growing or fading. Those answers come from trade data, not from a code table, and they decide whether a market is worth entering. diipl's free Market Research Report answers them for your machine.

Buying a weighbridge in India

  • Ask for a GST invoice that lists the capacity, platform size and the Legal Metrology approval mark of the model.
  • Agree who builds the foundation or pit, and get the civil drawing before the order is confirmed.
  • Ask the maker to handle installation, commissioning and the first Legal Metrology verification and stamping at your site, because a weighbridge cannot be moved to an office.
  • Confirm training for the weighing operator and the gate staff on the indicator, ticket printing and the tare routine.
  • Ask for a service plan: spare load cells and indicator parts, calibration visits and a response time when the bridge stops.
  • Keep the verification certificate. It records the next due date, so plan the re-verification visit before that date falls.

Buying from Indian weighbridge exporters

  • Weighing instruments used for trade are regulated by the importing region. Ask the importer early which approval, markings and test report the model needs, and whether a local verification visit is required after installation.
  • Keep load cell certificates, class and rating records and serial numbers ready, so the importer or an inspector can match them to the type documents.
  • Set the display unit, language and legal weight unit on the indicator to match the importing region, and ask whether the importer's name and address must appear on the instrument or its packaging.
  • Match the indicator and PC power supply to the site voltage and frequency, and ship a spare indicator board and load cell kit.
  • Platform sections travel as steel parts. Agree Incoterms, a coating suited to salt air on the voyage, packing, and who supplies the concrete or civil work at the destination.
  • Ask for a Certificate of Origin only if the importer needs it for duty benefits. Plan remote support for the indicator software and a local service partner, since a site visit from India takes time.

Standards and certifications for weighbridges

Weighbridges for each market must meet that market's rules. diipl confirms the certifications your market needs before any meeting. Each requirement below links to its official source.

Indian standard or ruleWhat it coversOfficial source
Legal Metrology (Approval of Models) Rules, 2011The Legal Metrology (Approval of Models) Rules, 2011These Rules set how a model of a weight or measure is approved: an application to the Director with drawings, tests by a recognised laboratory (a large model can be tested at another place), and a certificate with an approval mark. Ask the maker for the certificate and mark that match your model and capacity.View source
Legal Metrology Act, 2009The Legal Metrology Act, 2009One Legal Metrology department says section 24 of the Act deals with the verification and stamping of weights or measures. A Legal Metrology officer verifies and stamps the instrument, and the verification certificate records the next due date and the maximum permissible error. The same department treats a weighbridge as an instrument that cannot and should not be moved, so it charges no extra fee for verification at its own location.View source

EU CE and M marking for non-automatic weighing instruments (Directive 2014/31/EU)European UnionThe directive applies to all non-automatic weighing instruments, including imported ones, and defines them as instruments that need an operator during weighing. A road weighbridge that an operator uses to weigh a stopped vehicle fits that definition. For uses such as commercial transactions the instrument carries the CE mark, then the M mark with the year, then the number of any notified body involved in production control. The maker picks Module B followed by D or F, or Module G, and each route involves a notified body. Only instruments with no electronic devices and no spring in the load-measuring device are exempt from Module B, so an electronic weighbridge is not. The importer checks the marking and documents before placing the instrument on the market.View source

Weighbridge: frequently asked questions

Who makes weighbridges in India?

diipl does not publish manufacturer names. Tell diipl your capacity, platform size, pit or surface layout and site, and diipl matches a weighbridge maker that has passed GSTIN verification and a capacity audit. For this machine the audit looks at platform fabrication, load cell records, the model approval papers and a test weighing. diipl also confirms the maker's IEC and the certifications your market needs, then sets up a direct meeting.

What should I specify when buying a commercial weighbridge?

Give the heaviest loaded vehicle and its heaviest axle group, platform length and width, pit or surface layout and deck material. Ask for the load cell count, class and rating, the accuracy class and approval mark of the model, the indicator and ticket software, the power supply and backup, and who builds the foundation and arranges the first verification.

Which standards or certifications apply to weighbridges?

BIS lists the older weighbridge standard IS 1436:1991 as withdrawn and names IS 16514 (Part 1):2018 as its successor. IS 16514 (Part 2):2019 gives metrological and technical requirements for non-automatic weighing instruments. Legal Metrology model approval and verification rules also apply. Ask the maker which documents cover your model, and check that the approval mark matches the certificate.

What is the HSN code for weighbridges?

Weighbridges are classified under ITC-HS 84238900 (other), within HS subheading 842389. Some related machines use a different line: 84238290 when the maximum weighing capacity of the machine is five tonnes or less and it is not a beam scale. The export shipping bill carries this full 8-digit line; a GST invoice needs only its first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover. Confirm the 8-digit line against your exact machine before you file.

Can Indian manufacturers export weighbridges?

Yes, if the maker meets the importing region's rules for weighing instruments. The European Union's directive on non-automatic weighing instruments covers imported instruments too. For uses such as commercial transactions, the instrument needs the CE and M marks and a notified body route, and the importer checks the marking and documents. Other regions have their own approval routes, so ask each importer first.

Which industries buy weighbridges?

Mines and quarries, waste and recycling centres, businesses that sell or charge by weight over the bridge, and transporters that check axle and gross weights to avoid overloading and fines all use weighbridges. Factories and plants use them to record raw material and finished goods moving in and out by road, and rail weighbridges serve plants and terminals that load or unload wagons.

I manufacture weighbridges. How do I find verified buyers?

diipl studies which buyer groups and regions need weighbridges, such as mines, bulk terminals, recycling centres and rail sidings, and runs outreach to them. Before any introduction, diipl checks that each buyer has a real need, a budget, the authority to decide and a timeline. A direct meeting follows. For this machine, bring your model approval certificate, your capacity and platform range, and your installation and verification support plan. Your name and contact details are never published.

Should I choose a pit-type or a pitless weighbridge?

A pit-type bridge has its platform and equipment in a pit, so the weighing surface is level with the road and no ramps are needed. A pitless bridge is surface mounted with a short ramp up to the platform, and the equipment sits underneath. Pit-type suits tight layouts. Pitless needs no pit but needs room for ramps. Ask the maker for the civil drawing for both and compare the site work.

How is a weighbridge model approved in India?

The Central Government approves a model by issuing a certificate under the Legal Metrology (Approval of Models) Rules, 2011, and a state licence to make or import a weight or measure follows only after it. The maker applies to the Director with drawings, the places for seals and, for a digital model, the circuit diagram. A recognised laboratory tests the model, and a large model can be tested at another place. A significant change to the approved design or circuit can bring revocation.

Why do two weighbridges show slightly different weights for the same truck?

Each verified weighbridge is allowed a maximum permissible error, and the verification certificate records it along with the next due date. Small differences can therefore appear even when both bridges are verified. A large gap is a reason to ask for both certificates and the date of the last verification.

Who re-verifies a weighbridge, and when?

A Legal Metrology officer verifies and stamps the instrument, and the verification certificate records the next due date. One Legal Metrology department treats a weighbridge as an instrument that cannot and should not be moved, so it charges no extra fee for verification at its own location. The same department charges an extra fee for every quarter or part of a quarter if an instrument is presented after its stamp has expired. Book the visit before the date and check your state.
