What is a commercial biomass pellet machine?

A biomass pellet machine turns loose crop residue, husk, shells or sawdust into hard fuel pellets of even size. The feed is first ground fine and dried to the moisture the die needs. Rollers then press it against a thick steel die drilled with many holes, and the pressure and heat of pressing bind the particles together. The pellets leave the die hot and are cut to length, cooled and screened. A commercial plant builds a chipper, hammer mill, dryer, cooler and screen around the pellet mill. A briquetting press makes the same kind of fuel as larger solid blocks. Pellet producers, fuel suppliers and sawmills use these machines.

This page covers commercial and industrial pellet mills, pellet plants and briquetting presses that turn crop residue and wood residue into fuel; small home-use and hobby pellet makers are not covered.

How diipl verifies biomass pellet machine manufacturers

diipl checks every biomass pellet machine manufacturer before a buyer meets them. Every seller is GSTIN verified and capacity audited. IEC and the certifications your product and market need (ISO, CE, REACH, BIS) are confirmed before any meeting; Certificate of Origin and EIC inspection are arranged per shipment where required.

For biomass pellet machines, the capacity audit also covers:

  • The die and roller shop: how die holes are drilled and checked, how dies and roller shells are hardened, and the thickness and hole finish of a finished die
  • A trial run of the pellet mill on real biomass at rated motor load, with output per hour, motor current, pellet temperature at the die and a sieve test of the fines written down
  • The main shaft, bearings and gearbox on the assembly floor: run-out measured, lubrication points present, and a no-load run with no knocking, belt slip or hot bearings
  • For a briquetting press, the die, piston head or screw as built, plus the maker's records of how long they lasted on husk, shell or sawdust
  • Guards, emergency stops, dust extraction connections, a cyclone and magnets ahead of the mill fitted as supplied, not left as options

We match your requirement to a manufacturer that has passed these checks and arrange a direct meeting.

Types of biomass pellet machines we cover

Indian biomass pellet machine manufacturers on the diipl bench build these commercial and industrial types.

TypeTypical buyers
Ring die pellet millPellet plants that run steadily on ground residue.
Flat die pellet millSmaller units, and plants pressing light, low density residue.
Complete pellet plant lineProducers who make pellets in volume for power plants and industrial fuel users.
Screw briquetting pressMakers of solid-block fuel from dry husk, shell or sawdust.
Mechanical piston briquetting pressSawmills, joinery units and fuel makers with dry shavings, sawdust or husk.
Hydraulic piston briquetting pressSmaller briquette units that need low hourly output.

Ring die pellet mill

A perforated steel ring turns while two or three rollers press the feed against its inner face and force it through the holes. Pellets leave hot and are cut to about one or two times their diameter, so a cooling step follows. FAO lists ring inner diameters of about 250 mm to 1000 mm. The power of the drive motor sets the output, so ask for the motor rating with the hourly figure.

Flat die pellet mill

Two or more rollers travel over a flat perforated disk, and each hole is overrun by a roller several times a second. FAO lists disks of about 300 mm to 1500 mm across and says a flat die press does better on very low density feed. The power of the drive motor sets the output, so ask for the motor rating with the hourly figure.

Complete pellet plant line

A chipper grinder sizes baled residue, a dryer sets moisture and a hammer mill grinds fine. A cyclone removes dust, a screw feeder moves feed to the ring die mill, and a cooler and a vibrating screen send fines back to the mill. Good pellets go to a silo. Bucket elevators, a drag chain conveyor and pneumatic transfer link the stages.

Screw briquetting press

A feeder screw forces material continuously into a die, building pressure along the screw. In the heated die type, an electric resistance heater warms the die, the normal operating temperature is about 250 to 300 degrees Celsius, temperature is the control and the briquette has a hole through its centre. FAO gives a feed moisture limit of about 15 to 20 percent. FAO reports high wear, with one plant redressing its screws about every 100 hours.

Mechanical piston briquetting press

A piston mounted eccentrically on a crankshaft with a flywheel pushes feed into a tapered die. A three-phase motor drives the flywheel through a V-belt. Pressure in the compression section is about 110 to 140 MPa, so the feed must be dry. The main wear parts are the die, piston head and tapered cylinder.

Hydraulic piston briquetting press

The principle is the same as the mechanical piston press, but an electric motor drives a high-pressure hydraulic oil system and a feeding cylinder pre-compacts the feed. A programme controls the operation and can be altered for the feed and the product quality wanted. The press cylinder moves much more slowly, so output is markedly lower, and pressure is normally limited to about 30 MPa, so briquettes are less dense than from a mechanical press.

What to specify when buying a biomass pellet machine

A clear biomass pellet machine specification gets you comparable offers and a faster meeting. Share these points with diipl and we match them to the right manufacturer.

What to specifyWhy it matters
Rated output per hour on your own residueQuoted capacities may be for animal feed. FAO's 1990 survey says capacity on wood waste, straw and similar fuel feeds is often a factor of 4 lower. Ask for the rated figure on your residue and the test conditions.
Drive motor power and measured energy per tonneOutput is limited by drive motor power. Makers' figures run from 15 to 40 kWh per tonne, which FAO could not check; it expects wood waste to need 40 or more. Ask for measured kWh per tonne on your residue.
Flat die or ring dieFAO lists flat die disks about 300 to 1500 mm across and ring dies about 250 to 1000 mm inside, and says a flat die does better on very low density feed. Match the type to your feed.
Press channel length-to-diameter ratio, inlet angle and depth, and channel layoutA published review names channel length-to-diameter ratio, inlet angle and depth, and the surface area and layout of channels as die parameters that affect mill performance and pellet quality. Ask for them on the die quoted for your residue.
Pellet diameter and lengthPower plants ask for pellets not more than 25 mm across with no other dimension above 35 mm, and a buyer may set a diameter between 6 and 25 mm. Choose the die hole size to match your buyer's limit.
Feed particle size and moisture windowAn extension fact sheet says grind to particles no larger than the pellet diameter and measure moisture, not guess. Too dry and pellets do not stick; too wet and the die clogs. Ask which window your die suits.
Roller gap and pressure adjustmentRollers must sit snug against the die. If loose, the machine clogs; if too tight, the motor is overworked and the die wears fast. Ask how the setting is made and locked, by screws or springs.
Die and roller wear life on your residueFAO's 1990 estimate is that a pellet die lasts less than 1000 hours. Abrasive residue wears faster. Ask for expected hours on your residue, a spare die and roller set, and the time needed to change a die.
Briquetting press: feed moisture and wear partsFor a mechanical piston press FAO gives a feed moisture limit of 15 percent in most cases, ideally 8 to 12. Wet feed can cause a steam explosion. On rice husk, service life fell to about 70 hours.
Feeder to the dieIn the SAMARTH plant description a screw feeder takes dust-free feed from the cyclone to the ring die mill, where it spreads over the inner face of the die ahead of each roll. Ask for a metered feeder.
Cooler, screen and fines returnPellets leave the mill hot, about 80 to 100 degrees Celsius in the SAMARTH description. A blower-cooled cooler and a vibrating screen send fines and crumbled pellets back to the mill hopper.
Dust extraction and ignition controlOSHA notes that wood, grain and feed dust can become explosible when suspended in air at the right concentration. Ask where dust is extracted at the grinder, mill and cooler, and how ignition sources are kept out.
Pellet limits your buyer will test againstThe SAMARTH recommended specification for power-plant pellets sets bulk density not less than 600 kg per cubic metre, moisture not more than 14 percent as received and a fines limit of 5 percent. Ask for trial pellets that meet them.
Test methods for the trial pelletsIS 18724 points to IS 18557 Part 1 for mechanical durability and IS 17656 for fines content. Ask for the trial pellets to be tested by these methods at an accredited laboratory, not by the maker alone.

Who buys biomass pellet machines

Biomass Pellet Machines are bought by these commercial and industrial buyers, in India and abroad.

Buyers in India

HSN code and ITC-HS code for biomass pellet machines

The code for biomass pellet machines depends on whether the machine is a briquetting plant for agricultural or municipal waste, a fuel pellet mill, a press that takes only wood, or a mill built for animal feed. Choose the line that matches your machine:

  • 84798992 (briquetting plant and machinery intended for manufactureof briquettes from agricultural and municipal waste) when the machine is a briquetting plant or press that makes briquettes from agricultural or municipal waste such as husk, shell or straw.
  • 84798999 (other, within subheading 847989: machines and mechanical appliances; having individual functions, n.e.c. or included in this chapter) when the machine is a fuel pellet mill, which the briquetting line does not name, and no official text settles this reading.
  • 84793000 (presses for the manufacture of particle board or fibre building board of wood or other ligneous materials and other machinery for treating wood or cork) when the machine is a special press that takes only wood fibre, wood chips or sawdust.
  • 84361000 (machinery for preparing animal feeding stuffs) when the mill is built and sold to make animal feed pellets.

A biomass pellet mill or briquetting press squeezes crop residue or wood residue into fuel. No heading names such a machine, so it sits in the residual heading for machines with individual functions, in the other machines subheading. Customs rulings from another authority place pellet presses and briquetting presses that take wood and other biomass there, and not in the wood machinery subheading. The national line then turns on whether the machine is a briquetting plant for agricultural or municipal waste, a fuel pellet mill, a press that takes only wood, or a mill built for animal feed. No official text we found settles the fuel pellet mill, so no single line is printed.

In India the GST HSN code and the export ITC-HS code come from the same nomenclature. A GST invoice needs only the first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover; the export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit ITC-HS line. The classification is shown here; the applicable GST rate is not. Official source.

A classification is a fact any lookup can give you. The correct code still does not tell you which countries are buying biomass pellet machines right now, what duty each of them charges on the Indian line, or whether that demand is growing or fading. Those answers come from trade data, not from a code table, and they decide whether a market is worth entering. diipl's free Market Research Report answers them for your machine.

Buying a biomass pellet machine in India

  • Ask for a GST invoice that carries the model, the rated output on a named feedstock, the main motor rating and the serial number. Agree the warranty on die, rollers and gearbox in writing, and order a spare die and roller set with the mill.
  • Fix the feedstock plan before you sign: the residue you will press, the tonnes you can collect in a year, the distance it travels and the moisture it arrives at. The ministry's plant guidance puts a pellet plant's catchment at about fifty kilometres, and its model contract for supply to power plants accepts agro residue pellets, not wood-based pellets.
  • Plan the whole line, not only the mill. Leave space and foundations for the grinder, dryer, hammer mill, cooler, screen, silo and dust extraction, and size the three-phase supply, starter and earthing for the total connected load.
  • Ask the maker to run your own residue at rated motor load and note output, motor current and pellet temperature. Send the pellets for a test against the limits your buyer sets before you pay the final instalment.
  • Agree installation, commissioning and operator training in writing, including how to set the roller gap, how to start a cold die and how to clear a blocked die safely.
  • Treat any pellet silo or hopper as a confined space, and keep dust, hot pellets and ignition sources apart: stored pellets can use up the oxygen and give off toxic gas, and fine biomass dust can burn when suspended in air.

Buying from Indian biomass pellet machine exporters

  • Agree the Incoterm and packing in writing. Ask for packed weights per crate, and for dies and roller shells to be packed apart from the frame so one damaged crate does not stop the whole order.
  • Send your mains voltage, frequency and phase so the main motor, starter and control panel are built for them, and say whether the line will run on a generator.
  • If the machine goes into the European Union, ask for the EU declaration of conformity and for the maker's account of how guards, emergency stops and electrics were assessed, since the Commission's list of harmonised standards names none for pellet mills.
  • If a motor, sensor or fitting will stand in a classified dust zone, ask for its ATEX conformity papers before shipment.
  • Ask for the commercial invoice, packing list and, where your customs ask, a Certificate of Origin, plus the manual in the language of your operators.
  • Ask for a recorded trial on residue like yours, with output per hour, energy per tonne and a durability and fines test of the pellets against the ISO solid biofuels grade your own buyers use. Order a spare set of dies, roller shells and bearings with the first shipment.

Biomass Pellet Machine: frequently asked questions

Who makes biomass pellet machines in India?

Names of makers are not published by diipl. Share the residue you will press (husk, stalk, shell or sawdust), the hourly output you need and your site. diipl then matches you with a maker that has cleared GSTIN verification and an audit of its works. For this machine the audit looks at die drilling and heat treatment, a trial run on your residue at rated motor load, and the fines in the pellets that come out.

Which output, die and motor details should I ask for in a pellet mill?

Ask for rated output per hour on your own residue, because quoted figures may be feed-grade output and fuel residues often run a factor of 4 lower. Ask for the drive motor rating in kW, the die type and hole size, the die and roller wear life in hours and measured kWh per tonne. FAO quotes makers' figures of 15 to 40 kWh per tonne, which it could not verify.

Which standards or certifications apply to biomass pellet machines?

The Indian standards cover the fuel the machine makes: IS 18724 for pellets and IS 18725 for briquettes, both from agro and herbaceous residues, and IS 18557 Part 1 for testing pellet durability. They describe the fuel, not the machine, so ask the maker which guarding and electrical standards the machine itself follows. For the European Union, see the export notes on this page.

What is the HSN code for biomass pellet machines?

The code for biomass pellet machines depends on whether the machine is a briquetting plant for agricultural or municipal waste, a fuel pellet mill, a press that takes only wood, or a mill built for animal feed: 84798992 when the machine is a briquetting plant or press that makes briquettes from agricultural or municipal waste such as husk, shell or straw; 84798999 when the machine is a fuel pellet mill, which the briquetting line does not name, and no official text settles this reading; 84793000 when the machine is a special press that takes only wood fibre, wood chips or sawdust; 84361000 when the mill is built and sold to make animal feed pellets. The export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit line and a GST invoice its first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover, so confirm the line for your exact machine before you file. The HS code finder lists every 8-digit line.

Can Indian manufacturers export biomass pellet machines?

Yes. Indian makers can supply buyers abroad, and diipl confirms the maker holds an IEC (Importer Exporter Code) before any introduction. A buyer in the European Union should ask for the CE route and an EU declaration of conformity, and for ATEX papers if a part of the line sits in a dust zone. Agree mains voltage, frequency and a spare die set in writing.

Which industries buy biomass pellet machines?

Pellet producers supplying coal-based power plants are one group, as the SAMARTH mission promotes pellet co-firing there. CAQM has directed Punjab and Haryana to mandate paddy straw pellets or briquettes in brick kilns in Punjab and in the non-NCR districts of Haryana, from 20 percent co-firing in November 2025 to 50 percent in November 2028. Sawmills, farmer producer organisations and bamboo processors also buy.

I manufacture biomass pellet machines. How do I find verified buyers?

diipl first maps which groups need your machine, such as pellet producers feeding power plants, brick kiln fuel suppliers and sawmills, and where they sit. It then reaches them directly and checks four things before any introduction: a real requirement, funds in hand, who signs and when the plant must run. Your name and contact details stay private until you meet. Bring trial-run records, fines results and die-life data.

How much crop residue do I need before I buy a pellet plant?

The SAMARTH mission says a pellet plant's feed catchment is typically about 50 km in radius, and one acre gives roughly 1.5 to 3.0 tonnes of residue, varying by crop. India's residue is about 750 million tonnes a year, of which about 228 million tonnes is surplus after fodder and other uses. Keep fodder aside and secure a year-round supply before you pick the hourly output.

What does a pellet plant need besides the pellet mill?

SAMARTH lists a chipper grinder for first sizing, a dryer for moisture, a hammer mill for fine sizing and the pellet mill, plus handling equipment. Its process description adds screening with magnets, a cyclone for dust, a screw feeder, a cooler, a vibrating screen that returns fines to the mill and a silo. Pellets leave the mill at about 80 to 100 degrees Celsius.

Should I choose a ring die or a flat die pellet mill?

Both are common. FAO lists flat die disks about 300 mm to 1500 mm across and ring dies with inner diameters of about 250 mm to 1000 mm, and notes that a flat die press does better on very low density material. Decide on hourly output, how light your feed is and how quickly the maker can change a worn die.

Which pellet limits do power plants ask for?

The SAMARTH recommended specification asks for pellets not more than 25 mm across with no other dimension above 35 mm, bulk density not less than 600 kg per cubic metre, a fines limit of 5 percent, moisture not more than 14 percent as received and, for non-torrefied pellets, a gross calorific value of 2800 to 4000 kcal per kg. Test trial pellets against these.
