What is a commercial forklift?

A forklift is a powered truck with two forks on a vertical mast. Cylinders raise and lower the forks, and the mast tilts back slightly so the load rides steady while the truck moves. On a counterbalanced truck the load is carried out in front, and the weight of the truck and its counterweight offsets it so the truck resists tipping forward. Power comes from a battery and electric motor, or from a diesel or LPG engine. A reach truck is different: it works in narrow aisles, and the forks reach out into the rack while the truck itself stays in the aisle. Businesses use forklifts to load and unload vehicles, put pallets into racks and feed production lines.

This page covers powered forklifts (diesel, LPG, electric and reach trucks) for warehouses, factories and yards. Manual pallet trucks, home-use and hobby models are not covered.

How diipl verifies forklift manufacturers

diipl checks every forklift manufacturer before a buyer meets them. Every seller is GSTIN verified and capacity audited. IEC and the certifications your product and market need (ISO, CE, REACH, BIS) are confirmed before any meeting; Certificate of Origin and EIC inspection are arranged per shipment where required.

For forklifts, the capacity audit also covers:

  • A rated-load lift and hold test on a finished truck, with the load placed at the stated load centre, run in front of the auditor
  • Mast and carriage assembly: rail straightness, roller and chain fitment, and weld quality on the mast and the overhead guard
  • Counterweight and chassis fabrication: cutting, welding jigs and paint line, with a record kept against each serial number
  • A brake, steering and tilt test on the factory floor before dispatch, with the result written on a test sheet for that truck
  • A hydraulic test bay for pumps, valves and cylinders, and a battery and charger test bench for electric trucks

We match your requirement to a manufacturer that has passed these checks and arrange a direct meeting.

Types of forklifts we cover

Indian forklift manufacturers on the diipl bench build these commercial and industrial types.

TypeTypical buyers
Diesel counterbalance forkliftOperators who work mostly outdoors or on uneven ground and need quick refuelling between shifts
LPG counterbalance forkliftSites that want an engine truck and have a safe place to store and change gas cylinders
Electric counterbalance forkliftWarehouses and plants where most of the work is indoors
Electric reach truckRacked warehouses and distribution centres with narrow aisles

Diesel counterbalance forklift

A counterbalanced truck driven by a diesel engine. The larger trucks used outdoors are typically diesel or gasoline powered. Tyres are cushion for smooth floors or pneumatic for rough ground and slopes. Refuelling is quicker and easier than charging a battery truck, but the engine can be noisy and gives off air-polluting exhaust. Choose it when the truck works in yards, on uneven surfaces or on shifts that cannot stop.

LPG counterbalance forklift

A counterbalanced truck whose engine runs on liquid petroleum gas from a cylinder. Swapping the cylinder is a job for trained staff. The vapour is heavier than air and settles in low spots, so LPG trucks should not be refuelled in confined areas. Exhaust can still carry carbon monoxide, so keep the engine tuned and the space ventilated. Choose it where a gas engine suits the site and cylinders can be stored and changed safely.

Electric counterbalance forklift

A counterbalanced truck driven by an electric motor and a battery. It gives no exhaust at the truck and runs more quietly than an engine truck, so it suits indoor work. Electric trucks are typically powered by large lead-acid batteries, which must be charged routinely in a designated area because they can give off hydrogen. Choose it for warehouses and plants that work mainly indoors and can plan charging around the shifts.

Electric reach truck

A narrow-aisle electric truck for racked storage. Outrigger arms extend in front of the truck to give stability, and a telescoping pantograph lets the forks reach into the storage location. One industry guide calls it the original narrow-aisle lift truck, and the industry association places electric narrow-aisle trucks in a class of their own. Choose it when your storage is racked and your aisles are tight.

What to specify when buying a forklift

A clear forklift specification gets you comparable offers and a faster meeting. Share these points with diipl and we match them to the right manufacturer.

What to specifyWhy it matters
Rated capacity and the load centre it is quoted atThe rating assumes the load's centre of gravity sits at the load centre shown on the plate, for example 24 inches from the fork face. A load whose centre sits further out lowers the safe figure.
Capacity class for your truck typeSize the class to your heaviest pallet with headroom. One public catalogue lists four-wheel electric forklift trucks from 1,500 kg up to 7,000 kg, so check the maker's own range.
Mast type and maximum fork heightTwo-stage, three-stage and four-stage masts reach progressively higher. Match the maximum fork height to the height of your top rack beam, and check the overall raised height against the roof.
Collapsed mast height and free liftFree lift lets the forks rise before the mast sections extend, and free-lift masts usually have a smaller overall lowered height. That can decide whether the truck fits under a low roof or into a container.
Power source: battery, diesel or LPGEngine trucks can build up carbon monoxide in enclosed areas. Say where the truck will work, how many shifts it runs, and whether the building has proper ventilation.
Battery chemistry, voltage, charger and run time per chargeLead-acid batteries can give off hydrogen near the end of charging, so they are charged in a designated area with the covers open. Ask whether the pack is lead-acid or lithium-ion and what charger comes with it.
Tyre type: cushion or pneumaticCushion tyres are solid rubber and suit smooth indoor floors. Pneumatic tyres suit outdoor use, rough ground and slopes. Pick by the worst surface the truck will cross.
Fork length, thickness and carriage fitHook-on fork arms and carriages follow set mounting dimensions so arms and attachments can be swapped. Ask which fork carriage is fitted and which fork length suits your pallets.
Attachments such as side shifters and their effect on capacityA special attachment must be listed on the nameplate, and adding one generally lowers the capacity. Ask for the reduced rating with each attachment fitted.
Turning space and working aisle widthOne guide treats standard aisles as about 12 feet wide and narrow aisles as about 8 feet. Ask the maker for the minimum aisle width at your pallet size and load.
Overhead guardThe guard protects the driver from small falling items such as packages and bagged goods. It is not built to take a falling capacity load. Inspect it for broken welds and missing bolts.
Operator restraint and driver protectionA consensus safety standard calls for a restraint device on trucks built after 1992, and regulators expect drivers to use one where fitted. Ask what restraint the truck has.
Stability test record for your modelAn international standard sets the stability tests for counterbalanced trucks with a mast. Ask for the maker's written test result for the model you are buying, not a general statement.
Nameplate data and operator manualThe nameplate should show model, serial number, truck weight, capacity and the standard the truck was built to. Check it on delivery and ask for the manual and a daily check sheet.

HSN code and ITC-HS code for forklifts

The code for forklifts depends on whether the forklift is driven by an electric motor or by a diesel, petrol or gas engine. Choose the line that matches your machine:

  • 84271000 (self-propelled trucks powered by an electric motor) when the forklift is driven by an electric motor, as an electric counterbalance forklift or an electric reach truck is.
  • 84272000 (other self-propelled trucks) when the forklift is driven by a diesel, petrol or gas engine, as a diesel or gas counterbalance forklift is.

The tariff heading for lifting and handling trucks splits self propelled trucks by their power source. Trucks powered by an electric motor have their own subheading, and every other self propelled truck, which includes forklifts with a diesel, petrol or gas engine, falls in the subheading for other self propelled trucks. A forklift therefore takes one line or the other according to its drive, not according to its mast, its capacity or whether it is counterbalanced or a reach truck. Trucks that are not self propelled fall in the line for other trucks.

In India the GST HSN code and the export ITC-HS code come from the same nomenclature. A GST invoice needs only the first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover; the export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit ITC-HS line. The classification is shown here; the applicable GST rate is not. Official source.

A classification is a fact any lookup can give you. The correct code still does not tell you which countries are buying forklifts right now, what duty each of them charges on the Indian line, or whether that demand is growing or fading. Those answers come from trade data, not from a code table, and they decide whether a market is worth entering. diipl's free Market Research Report answers them for your machine.

Buying a forklift in India

  • Ask for a written quote that names the model, rated capacity at the stated load centre, mast type, fork size, tyres, power source and what is included, such as the charger and spare forks. Ask that the GST invoice carries the serial number that matches the nameplate.
  • Plan delivery, unloading and traffic layout before the date: the route inside your site, floor strength, any ramps or dock levellers, and separate lanes or barriers between trucks and people on foot.
  • For electric trucks, plan the charging room first: a separate area with ventilation, a power point of the right rating, and a safe way to handle the battery.
  • Insist on commissioning at your site, a handover of the operator manual and daily check sheet, and hands-on training for every driver who will use the truck.
  • Get the spares and service plan in writing: tyres, chains, hydraulic seals and filters, where they are stocked, and how quickly an engineer can reach your site.
  • Ask that the offer lists the horn, reversing alarm or light, mirrors and overhead guard, and read the warranty for what voids it, such as overloading or fitting unapproved attachments.

Buying from Indian forklift exporters

  • Agree the Incoterm in writing and decide who loads the truck. Ask how it will be braced and packed, and check its collapsed mast height against the container opening.
  • For battery trucks, match the charger to the supply at the destination, in voltage, frequency and plug type, and ask the forwarder how the battery must be packed and declared.
  • For engine trucks, ask the importer which engine emission rules apply at the destination and which fuel is easy to buy there. For LPG trucks, check which cylinder fitting is used locally.
  • Prepare the papers an importing site's safety team asks for: nameplate data, load chart, a rated-load and stability test record for the model, and the operator manual in the local language.
  • Confirm the conformity route for the destination region before production, such as the Machinery Directive route in the European Union or an approval label and nameplate designation for North America.
  • Agree a first set of wear parts with the order (tyres, chains, seals, filters) and a remote video support route for the service team.

Forklift: frequently asked questions

Who makes forklifts in India?

Maker names are not published on this page. Share the truck type, rated capacity, lift height and power source you need with diipl, which then picks a maker whose GSTIN is verified and whose factory has passed a capacity audit. For forklifts the audit looks at mast and chassis welding, counterweight fabrication and a rated-load test on a finished truck. diipl then books the first meeting between you and that maker.

Which capacity and load centre should I ask for on a forklift?

Weigh your heaviest pallet and find where its centre of gravity sits from the fork face. The plate rating assumes the load centre shown on it, and if the load is longer or sits further out, the capacity must be recalculated. Ask for the capacity chart for your mast height and buy for the real load, not the nominal tonne figure.

Which safety standards apply to forklifts?

ISO 3691-1 is the international safety standard for self-propelled industrial trucks other than driverless, variable-reach and burden-carrier trucks. It covers counterbalanced and reach trucks, among others, powered by battery, diesel, gasoline or LPG. ISO lists the 2011 edition as due for revision. India's BIS also publishes forklift standards, listed in the compliance notes on this page. Ask the maker which edition each model is tested to.

What is the HSN code for forklifts?

The code for forklifts depends on whether the forklift is driven by an electric motor or by a diesel, petrol or gas engine: 84271000 when the forklift is driven by an electric motor, as an electric counterbalance forklift or an electric reach truck is; 84272000 when the forklift is driven by a diesel, petrol or gas engine, as a diesel or gas counterbalance forklift is. The export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit line and a GST invoice its first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover, so confirm the line for your exact machine before you file. The HS code finder lists every 8-digit line.

Can Indian manufacturers export forklifts?

They can when the truck is built and documented for the destination. Prepare the safety standard route for the region, a nameplate showing rated capacity and load centre, a stability test record and an operator manual. Battery trucks need a charger that matches the local supply, and engine trucks may face local emission rules. In the European Union, Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 replaces the Machinery Directive from January 2027, so check which text applies on your delivery date.

Which industries buy forklifts?

A public workplace safety institute describes powered industrial trucks being used to move or lift materials in warehouses, retail, manufacturing facilities and dockyards, and also on construction sites. In practice that means logistics and storage firms, retail and e-commerce distribution, factories and port-side yards. Electric trucks suit indoor work, and engine trucks suit outdoor and mixed use.

I make forklifts. How do I find verified buyers?

Send diipl the truck types you build, your capacity and lift height range, and whether you offer battery or engine models. diipl studies which buyer groups and regions need that mix, runs outreach to them, screens each buyer on the requirement, the money set aside, who signs and when the truck is needed, and then sets up a meeting. Your company name is kept off the page.

Should I buy an electric or an engine-driven forklift?

Electric trucks give no exhaust, run quietly and suit indoor work, and one industry guide says they usually run a full eight-hour shift on one charge. Engine trucks are quicker to refuel, but they can be noisy and give off air-polluting exhaust. Choose by where the truck works, the hours it runs, and whether you can set up a safe charging area.

What does the capacity plate on a forklift tell me?

The plate shows the truck model and serial number, truck weight, capacity, and the standard the design complies with. Capacity assumes the load centre shown on the label. A special attachment must be listed on the plate, and adding an attachment generally lowers capacity. Check that the plate is present and readable on delivery.

Is it safe to run an LPG forklift indoors?

Only with a well-maintained engine, enough ventilation and carbon monoxide monitoring. A public health report on poisonings at industrial sites found gas-fuelled forklifts giving off very high carbon monoxide in poorly ventilated buildings, and it called for better maintenance, ventilation and monitoring. If your building cannot be ventilated well, an electric truck avoids the problem.

How wide an aisle does a reach truck need compared with an ordinary forklift?

Reach trucks are built for narrow aisles. One industry guide says a 12-foot standard aisle lets a counterbalanced truck turn in the aisle, while narrow aisles are typically 8 feet wide and very narrow aisles 5.5 to 6 feet. The real figure depends on the truck's turning geometry and your pallet size, so ask the maker for the minimum working aisle width for your load.
