What is a commercial plate rolling machine?
A plate rolling machine forms flat steel plate into round or conical shells. The plate passes between heavy rolls, and the operator moves the rolls closer after each pass until the plate reaches the set curve. The common layout has one top roll over two lower rolls. Four-roll machines add a roll that holds the plate and pre-bends its ends, and two-roll machines handle light sheet. A mechanical or hydraulic drive supplies the force, and a manual, digital or CNC control sets the roll positions. The metal springs back slightly after rolling, so operators roll a little tighter than the target. The rolled shells become tanks, boilers, vessels, towers and pipe sections.
This page covers commercial and industrial plate rolling machines for fabrication shops and factories; home-use and hobby models are not covered.
How diipl verifies plate rolling machine manufacturers
diipl checks every plate rolling machine manufacturer before a buyer meets them. Every seller is GSTIN verified and capacity audited. IEC and the certifications your product and market need (ISO, CE, REACH, BIS) are confirmed before any meeting; Certificate of Origin and EIC inspection are arranged per shipment where required.
For plate rolling machines, the capacity audit also covers:
- A rolling trial on the factory floor with plate of the stated grade and thickness, rolled down to the stated smallest diameter
- A pre-bend trial on both plate ends, measuring the flat length left before it is cut off
- Roundness and taper of a rolled test cylinder and a test cone, measured at several points along the length
- Roll material, hardening and surface finish checked against the maker's records and by eye, with roll parallelism checked under load
- Frame and drive build: weld quality, hydraulic oil level and filter alarms on hydraulic models, overload protection, and the emergency stop and guards tested under power
We match your requirement to a manufacturer that has passed these checks and arrange a direct meeting.
Types of plate rolling machines we cover
Indian plate rolling machine manufacturers on the diipl bench build these commercial and industrial types.
| Type | Typical buyers |
|---|---|
| Two-roll machine with a soft bottom roll | Light gauge sheet metal workshops, including high-speed batch production |
| Three-roll symmetrical (pyramid) machine | Mostly found as second-hand machines today, since few if any are built new |
| Three-roll initial pinch (slip roll) machine | Workshops rolling lighter gauge material |
| Three-roll double pinch machine | Fabricators that need both plate ends pre-bent on a three-roll machine without removing the plate |
| Three-roll variable geometry machine | Fabricators of thick plate shells and cones |
| Four-roll machine, hydraulic or CNC | Shipbuilding, automotive and precision machinery makers |
Two-roll machine with a soft bottom roll
A metal top roll works against a bottom roll coated with urethane or a similar soft material. The soft roll conforms to the top roll, so no pre-bending is needed and very small diameters can often be made in one pass. It rolls cylinders and half cylinders only, not cones, and it suits light gauge metal rather than heavy plate. Automatic feeding and discharge can be added for batch work.
Three-roll symmetrical (pyramid) machine
One top roll sits above two lower rolls, one on each side, so the front and back of the machine look the same. In the original true pyramid design the lower rolls are fixed, so the plate cannot be pre-bent in the machine and long flat areas stay at each end. Few if any are built today, and newer pyramid styles have movable lower rolls. Pick a symmetrical layout only if flat ends are pre-bent elsewhere or cut off.
Three-roll initial pinch (slip roll) machine
Two rolls, one above the other, pinch the plate at the front, and a single offset roll at the back sets the radius. The plate loads flat but usually needs several passes. It can pre-bend, though the sheet must be removed and reloaded to pre-bend both ends. Many are driven by an electro-mechanical motor, with hydraulic models for thicker plate and hand-crank versions for thin gauge.
Three-roll double pinch machine
The top roll stays still while the two lower rolls move up and down, in a straight line or in an arc depending on the model. The plate can be pinched from either side, so both ends can be pre-bent without taking the plate out of the machine. Four-roll machines are also double pinch machines, with an extra roll directly below the top roll. Choose it when you want pre-bent ends from a three-roll layout.
Three-roll variable geometry machine
The two lower side rolls move sideways while the top roll moves up and down, which changes the distance between the lower rolls. A wider gap needs less force, so heavier plate can be rolled, and a narrow gap gives tighter diameters in thinner plate. All rolls are driven, the plate loads parallel to the ground, and the rolls can be angled for cone rolling. It is usually bought for heavier jobs.
Four-roll machine, hydraulic or CNC
Side rolls pre-bend both plate ends inside the same machine, so flat ends are eliminated and there is less manual repositioning than on a three-roll machine. Tolerances are tighter, and CNC or touchscreen control is common. Choose it for high volume work, tight tolerances or complex shapes.
What to specify when buying a plate rolling machine
A clear plate rolling machine specification gets you comparable offers and a faster meeting. Share these points with diipl and we match them to the right manufacturer.
| What to specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Maximum plate thickness, with the steel grade and yield strength it is rated for | Rated capacity is quoted at a stated yield strength. One maker's four-roll table gives 245 MPa for every model. Stronger steel needs more force, so ask for the rating on your own grade. |
| Working length of the rolls (the widest plate) | The widest plate you will roll sets the working length of the rolls. Size it to your real widest job and not far beyond, and ask how the plate is supported along its full length. |
| Smallest finished diameter at full thickness | One guide defines working capacity as the smallest drum diameter the machine can roll at maximum thickness and width, at a stated yield limit, cold. Ask for that figure, not just the roll size. |
| Thinnest plate and the range of jobs | Unlike a press brake, the tooling on a plate roll is the rolls themselves and usually cannot be changed to suit smaller diameters. Many shops keep more than one roll for different thicknesses and diameters. |
| Pre-bend method, pre-bend thickness and flat end left | Without pre-bending, a three-roll machine leaves flat ends on the plate. One guide gives the pre-bend length as half the distance between the lower roll centres plus 30 to 50 mm. Ask for the thickest plate it can pre-bend. |
| Cone rolling method | Cones are rolled from a fan-shaped blank. Ask whether the machine uses tapered rolls, a clamping roll on a four-roll machine or a thrust roller, and the steepest cone and thickest plate it can roll. |
| Drive type and control (mechanical, hydraulic or hybrid; manual, digital or CNC) | One guide says hydraulic drives give smoother operation and greater force control, while mechanical drives may give higher speeds and lower maintenance. Ask which is fitted and whether the control stores programs. |
| Roll material, hardening and surface finish | Hardened rolls last longer. One maker lists roller surfaces heat treated to a hardness that can reach 260 to 300 HB. Ask for roll material, hardness and finish in writing, because the rolls are the tooling. |
| Roll parallelism and deflection control | The rolls must stay parallel under load. One maker lists an electronic balance synchronisation control with a stated accuracy of plus or minus 0.15 mm. Ask how your supplier controls parallelism and deflection. |
| Workpiece removal and supports for large shells | A closed cylinder has to come off the roll, so ask what drop-end or similar arrangement is fitted. Large shells also need side or overhead supports, so ask which come with the machine. |
| Horizontal or vertical format | Vertical format machines extend upwards and allow large diameters, such as storage tanks, to be produced. Confirm which format suits your biggest shell and your building height. |
| Rolling speed, main motor rating and electrical supply | Rolling speed affects output and main motor power affects the force the drive can deliver. One maker's four-roll range lists main motors from 4 to 37 kW. State your plant voltage, frequency and phases in the order. |
| Safety devices at the pinch points | The pinch points are where the plate is gripped between the rolls. One maker lists an emergency barrier around the machine, a safety stop for all moving parts and overload protection. Ask to see each one working. |
| Machine weight, footprint and foundation | Weight and size set floor loading, crane needs and the foundation. One maker's four-roll table lists weights from 4800 to 38500 kg. Ask for the foundation drawing and lifting points before the order. |

HSN code and ITC-HS code for plate rolling machines
The code for plate rolling machines depends on whether the plate rolling machine is numerically controlled or not. Choose the line that matches your machine:
- 84622600 (other numerically controlled bending, folding, straightening or flattening machines) when the plate rolling machine is numerically controlled.
- 84622900 (other, within subheading 846229: machine-tools; bending, folding, straightening or flattening machines (including press brakes), for working metal, numerically controlled n.e.c. in item 84.62.2) when the plate rolling machine is not numerically controlled, for example one whose rolls are set by hand or by fixed stops.
A plate rolling machine bends flat plate or sheet into cylinders and cones between rolls, so it is a bending machine for flat products and belongs to the tariff group for bending, folding, straightening and flattening machines. Official rulings on hand cranked three roll round bending machines for sheet place them in the residual line of that group and not in the profile forming line. Inside the group the line splits on whether the machine is numerically controlled. No official text found separates a numerically controlled plate rolling machine from the numerically controlled roll forming line, so a numerically controlled plate roll should be confirmed with customs.
In India the GST HSN code and the export ITC-HS code come from the same nomenclature. A GST invoice needs only the first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover; the export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit ITC-HS line. The classification is shown here; the applicable GST rate is not. Official source.

A classification is a fact any lookup can give you. The correct code still does not tell you which countries are buying plate rolling machines right now, what duty each of them charges on the Indian line, or whether that demand is growing or fading. Those answers come from trade data, not from a code table, and they decide whether a market is worth entering. diipl's free Market Research Report answers them for your machine.

Buying a plate rolling machine in India
- Ask for a GST tax invoice that names the model, serial number and rated capacity, and check that the seller's GSTIN matches the contract.
- Write the rating into the order: plate grade and yield strength, thickness, width, smallest diameter, pre-bend and cone needs. Make a rolling trial on your own plate part of acceptance.
- Agree who builds the foundation, who unloads and positions the machine, and who commissions it. Get the foundation drawing in time to prepare the floor.
- Ask for operator training at commissioning. Pre-bending and allowing for springback depend on operator skill, so a written set-up and safe-use sheet helps.
- Get a spares list for rolls, bearings, seals and, on hydraulic models, hoses, with a named service contact and a response time in writing.
- Plan crane and truck access at your plant for a heavy machine, and have the electrical supply and earthing ready before it arrives.
Buying from Indian plate rolling machine exporters
- For the European Union, ask for the maker's signed declaration of conformity, the CE mark on the machine and the instruction manual. No harmonised standard is listed for plate rolls, so ask which standards the risk assessment followed.
- The pinch points between the rolls are a main safety point of this machine. Be ready to show the emergency stop, barrier or guards, overload protection and the risk assessment file.
- Order the main motor, hydraulic power pack and control panel for the importing plant's voltage and frequency, written into the contract in words.
- Prepare the commercial invoice, packing list, Certificate of Origin, manual, hydraulic and wiring diagrams, the foundation drawing and the maker's rating table showing the yield strength it was rated at.
- Plan packing for a heavy machine: marked lifting points, rolls coated against rust, and loose parts such as the control console, supports and drop-end parts crated with a part list. The Incoterm decides who needs a crane to unload and position it.
- Agree a starter set of wear parts, remote support for control faults and a clear warranty start date. For CNC models, keep a copy of the control programs. For North America, ask whether the buyer's safety team applies the roll bending machine standard.
Standards and certifications for plate rolling machines

Plate Rolling Machine: frequently asked questions
Who makes plate rolling machines in India?
diipl does not publish manufacturer names. Tell diipl the plate grade, thickness, width, smallest diameter and whether you need cones, and diipl matches a maker that has passed GSTIN verification and a capacity audit. For a plate roll the audit includes a rolling trial on real plate, a pre-bend trial and a check of the rolls, drive and frame. diipl also confirms the maker's Importer Exporter Code (IEC) and the certifications your market needs, then arranges a direct meeting.
What should I specify when buying a commercial plate rolling machine?
Specify the plate grade and yield strength, the largest thickness and width, and the smallest finished diameter. Add the pre-bend thickness, whether you need cones, the drive and control type, roll hardness, workpiece removal, supports for large shells, safety devices and the supply voltage. Ask for the rating in writing on your own plate.
Which standards or certifications apply to plate rolling machines?
The BIS list for machines, presses and press work names two standards written for plate bending machines: IS 14878, a test chart, and IS 12984, a proforma for a purchase specification. Treat them as references and ask the maker which of them the model is tested or specified against. Export markets add their own rules, such as CE marking for the European Union.
What is the HSN code for plate rolling machines?
The code for plate rolling machines depends on whether the plate rolling machine is numerically controlled or not: 84622600 when the plate rolling machine is numerically controlled; 84622900 when the plate rolling machine is not numerically controlled, for example one whose rolls are set by hand or by fixed stops. The export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit line and a GST invoice its first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover, so confirm the line for your exact machine before you file. The HS code finder lists every 8-digit line.
Can Indian manufacturers export plate rolling machines?
Yes. A maker with a valid Importer Exporter Code (IEC) can supply abroad once the machine meets the importing region's machine safety rules, such as CE marking for the European Union. The practical work is the conformity file, a supply voltage match, a rating table at a stated yield strength, a packing plan for a heavy machine and a spares kit. diipl finds importing fabricators and sets up the meeting.
Which industries buy plate rolling machines?
Makers of boilers, pressure vessels, heat exchangers, storage tanks and chemical process equipment buy them, as do wind tower and large steel structure fabricators, shipyards, power plant equipment makers and heavy machinery makers. Lighter machines serve HVAC duct and sheet metal workshops.
I manufacture plate rolling machines. How do I find verified buyers?
diipl studies which fabricator segments and regions need the plate rolls you build, such as tank, vessel and wind tower makers, and runs outreach to them. Before any introduction, diipl confirms that each buyer has a genuine requirement, funds set aside, the power to sign the order and a delivery date in mind. Then it arranges a direct meeting. Your name and contact details are never published. Have your rating table at a stated yield strength, your pre-bend and cone capability and your rolling trial records ready.
How do I choose between a three-roll and a four-roll plate rolling machine?
Choose a three-roll machine for plain cylinders in small batches, where the operator can reposition the plate to pre-bend both ends. Choose a four-roll machine for high volume work, tight tolerances or complex shapes, or when you want both ends pre-bent in one setup. One maker's comparison adds that three-roll results depend heavily on operator skill.
How thick a plate can a plate rolling machine roll?
A thickness figure means little unless the yield strength, plate width and smallest diameter come with it. One maker's published table of four-roll models lists maximum bending thickness from 4 mm to 40 mm on plate with a yield limit of 245 MPa, with roll working lengths from 2050 mm to 3100 mm. Always ask for the rating on your own steel grade.
Why do rolled cylinders have flat ends, and how are they avoided?
On a symmetrical three-roll machine the plate ends stay straight unless they are pre-bent, and the flat section is about half the gap between the centres of the lower rolls. The fixes are to pre-bend the edges on a press brake first, to pre-bend on the roll machine with a support plate, or to leave extra plate and cut the ends off. Four-roll machines pre-bend and then continue bending in the same stroke.
Can a plate rolling machine roll cones?
Yes, with the right method. A cone is rolled from a fan-shaped blank. Tapered rolls suit single-variety, high-volume work. On a four-roll machine the clamping roll method tilts the lower roll and clamps the large end of the plate. A thrust roller at the plate edge is another route, but it can damage a bevel edge, and the bevel edge affects weld quality. Ask which method the machine uses and the steepest cone it can roll.
