What is a commercial industrial sewing machine?
An industrial sewing machine is a power-driven machine built for long, continuous work on a garment floor. A needle carries thread through the cloth, a hook or loopers form the stitch, and feed parts move the cloth under the needle. Many industrial machines are built for one job. A lockstitch machine joins plies with a needle thread and a bobbin thread. An overlock machine sews and finishes a raw edge with loopers. A coverstitch machine hems knits. Bartack and buttonhole machines reinforce and finish openings. Automatic units carry out a whole operation. The head sits on a table. The motor is usually mounted separately under the table; some direct-drive heads connect it to the main shaft.
This page covers commercial and industrial sewing machines for garment factories and export houses; household sewing machines are not covered.
How diipl verifies industrial sewing machine manufacturers
diipl checks every industrial sewing machine manufacturer before a buyer meets them. Every seller is GSTIN verified and capacity audited. IEC and the certifications your product and market need (ISO, CE, REACH, BIS) are confirmed before any meeting; Certificate of Origin and EIC inspection are arranged per shipment where required.
For industrial sewing machines, the capacity audit also covers:
- A live run of each head type at rated speed on the factory floor, sewing the buyer's own fabric and ply count, with a check for skipped stitches, thread breaks and a hot needle.
- How the critical parts are made: whether hooks, loopers, feed dogs and needle bars are machined in the factory, and which gauges are used to check them.
- A run-in and test record for every head before dispatch, including noise at working speed and an oil leak check on the head and table.
- Motor, control box and wiring fitted on a finished machine: earthing, cable routing, and the guards over the needle, take-up lever and belts.
- The spares store and the service team: stock of needles, hooks, loopers and belts, and technicians who can visit a buyer's floor.
We match your requirement to a manufacturer that has passed these checks and arrange a direct meeting.
Types of industrial sewing machines we cover
Indian industrial sewing machine manufacturers on the diipl bench build these commercial and industrial types.
| Type | Typical buyers |
|---|---|
| Single-needle lockstitch machine | Garment factories of every kind, for shirts, trousers and general seaming. |
| Overlock and safety stitch machine | Knitwear, T-shirt and innerwear makers, and woven garment lines that need finished edges. |
| Flatlock and coverstitch machine | Knitwear and T-shirt makers, for hems and necklines. |
| Bartack machine | Trouser and jeans makers, and any line that reinforces pockets, loops and openings. |
| Buttonhole machine | Shirt, trouser and polo shirt makers. |
| Automatic sewing units | Jeans and trouser makers, and factories with high-volume repeat operations. |
Single-needle lockstitch machine
One needle thread and one bobbin thread lock together inside the seam, so this machine joins plies of fabric. One published high-speed range is direct-drive with an automatic thread trimmer, runs at 4,000 to 5,000 stitches per minute, sews stitch lengths up to 5 mm and comes in medium-weight and heavy-weight versions. Choose it for general seaming.
Overlock and safety stitch machine
Loopers form thread loops that pass over the fabric edge, so the machine seams and finishes the edge together. One published range offers a one-needle overlock, a two-needle overlock and a safety stitch machine (stitch styles 504, 514 and 516) at 8,000 to 8,500 stitches per minute, with stitch length from 0.8 to 4 mm. A lever sets the differential feed for stretching or gathering.
Flatlock and coverstitch machine
Two or three needles sew parallel straight stitches while a looper thread covers the other face of the seam, giving a top and bottom covering stitch for hems and seams. One published cylinder-bed range offers needle gauges from 3.2 to 6.4 mm, and a version with an unlubricated frame to reduce oil stains on garments. Choose it when a hem needs a covering stitch on both faces.
Bartack machine
A bartack machine sews a stored pattern of stitches to reinforce a point that takes stress. One published series runs at up to 3,300 stitches per minute, covers a standard sewing area of 40 by 30 mm (60 by 50 mm on one pattern model), holds 100 standard patterns and stores up to 999. Its listed uses include belt loops and eyelet buttonholes.
Automatic sewing units
Automatic units carry out a whole operation, such as setting a pocket or attaching a belt loop, automatically. One maker's apparel range lists pocket setters for jeans, welting machines for pockets on slacks and working pants, belt-loop attaching machines, a buttonhole indexer and waist elastic attaching machines for boxer pants and briefs. They suit repeat operations where every piece must be sewn the same way.
What to specify when buying an industrial sewing machine
A clear industrial sewing machine specification gets you comparable offers and a faster meeting. Share these points with diipl and we match them to the right manufacturer.
| What to specify | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Machine type and the operation it must do | Name the exact operation: joining plies, finishing an edge, hemming knits, reinforcing a stress point or making buttonholes. The operation decides the machine type, and settings cannot turn one machine type into another. |
| Stitch type by ISO 4915 designation | ISO 4915 classifies and names stitch types. State the designation of the stitch you want, so buyer and maker mean the same stitch and a sample seam can be matched to a machine before the order. |
| Maximum stitching speed and stitch length | One published high-speed lockstitch range runs at 4,000 to 5,000 stitches per minute with stitch length up to 5 mm. The speed depends on stitch length, so ask for it at your own seam length and ply count. |
| Needle system and size range | Needle size must suit fabric weight. One published lockstitch range lists sizes 9 to 18 (Nm 65 to 110) for medium-weight work and sizes 20 to 23 (Nm 125 to 160) for heavy-weight work. |
| Drive and motor: servo or clutch | A servo motor uses less electricity and is silent when the machine is not sewing. A clutch motor keeps spinning whenever it is connected to power. Ask which one is fitted and how it is mounted. |
| Lubrication system | One published lockstitch range offers fully dry, semi-dry and minute-quantity lubrication heads, all meant to keep oil off the material. Ask what must still be oiled by hand and which oil grade the maker specifies. |
| Feed system: drop feed or walking foot | Drop feed serves light and medium duty work, and walking foot serves medium and heavy duty work. Choose the feed to suit the ply count and the weight of the material, and test it on your thickest seam. |
| Differential feed and stitch length on overlock machines | One overlock range offers differential feed of 1:2 up to 1:4 for gathering and 1:0.7 down to 1:0.6 for stretching, set by lever, with stitch length from 0.8 to 4 mm. Match the range to your fabric. |
| Needles and needle gauge on coverstitch machines | Coverstitch heads take two or three needles. One cylinder-bed range offers needle gauges from 3.2 to 6.4 mm. The gauge sets the distance between the stitch lines, so match it to the hem or seam you sew. |
| Thread trimmer, back-tack and needle position functions | Electronic machines can automate thread cutting, needle positioning and back-tacking. List the functions you need and check on the machine you are shown that each one works at working speed. |
| Sewing area and stored patterns on bartack machines | One bartack series offers a standard sewing area of 40 by 30 mm, holds 100 standard patterns and stores up to 999. Match the sewing area to your largest reinforcement and ask how patterns are changed. |
| Sewing area and stored patterns on programmable units | One pattern sewer offers sewing areas of 250 by 160 mm and 300 by 200 mm and stores up to 999 patterns. Match the area to your largest pattern, and ask how patterns are loaded and backed up. |
| Safety guards and the safety standard the design follows | ISO 10821 sets safety requirements for professional sewing machines, units and systems. Ask which standard the maker designs to, and check that guards over the needle, take-up lever and belts are fitted on the machine you receive. |
| Electrical supply and air supply | Say whether your supply is single-phase or three-phase, and its voltage and frequency. One automatic pocket setter lists both single-phase and three-phase options and a compressed air requirement, so pneumatic units need an air supply too. |

HSN code and ITC-HS code for industrial sewing machines
The code for industrial sewing machines depends on whether the machine counts as an automatic unit that carries out its sewing cycle by itself or as an ordinary sewing machine that the operator guides, and, under the national tariff, whether it is an industrial machine whose motor power and stitching speed pass the limits printed in the industrial machine line. Choose the line that matches your machine:
- 84522110 (industrial sewing machines) when the machine is an industrial sewing machine whose motor power and stitching speed both pass the limits printed in the national line.
- 84522120 (other with electronic controls or electric motors) when the machine is an automatic unit with electronic controls or an electric motor that does not qualify as an industrial machine under the limits printed in the national line.
- 84522190 (other, within subheading 845221: sewing machines; (not household type), automatic units) when the machine is an automatic unit with neither electronic controls nor an electric motor.
- 84522900 (other, within subheading 845229: sewing machines; not household or automatic unit type) when the machine is a sewing machine that is not an automatic unit under the international subheading.
Industrial sewing machines belong in the sewing machine heading. Inside it the international subheadings split machines into automatic units and other sewing machines, and customs authorities draw that line differently for operator guided industrial machines that have automatic features such as thread trimming. The national tariff adds a separate line for industrial machines with a motor and a high stitching speed inside the automatic units subheading. Because the official texts do not agree, no single line is printed and the branches are shown.
In India the GST HSN code and the export ITC-HS code come from the same nomenclature. A GST invoice needs only the first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover; the export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit ITC-HS line. The classification is shown here; the applicable GST rate is not. Official source.

A classification is a fact any lookup can give you. The correct code still does not tell you which countries are buying industrial sewing machines right now, what duty each of them charges on the Indian line, or whether that demand is growing or fading. Those answers come from trade data, not from a code table, and they decide whether a market is worth entering. diipl's free Market Research Report answers them for your machine.

Buying an industrial sewing machine in India
- Ask for a GST invoice that lists each head, motor, control box and table with serial numbers, so every part is covered by the warranty.
- Confirm exactly what comes with the machine: head only, or head with table, stand, motor and control box.
- Ask the maker to install and commission each machine on your floor, set the stitch, tension and feed, and train your operators and mechanics.
- Agree the spares plan before you order: needles, hooks, loopers, feed dogs and belts, plus how fast a technician can reach your factory.
- Check your electrical supply and earthing before delivery, and the compressed air line for automatic units.
- Check how heads, tables and stands will be packed and who assembles them on site, and run a trial on your own fabric before the machines are accepted.
Buying from Indian industrial sewing machine exporters
- Tell the maker your voltage, frequency and whether your supply is single-phase or three-phase, so the motor and control box are built for your site.
- For automatic units with pneumatic parts, confirm the compressed air pressure and the hose fittings available at your factory.
- For the European Union, ask for the EU declaration of conformity and the manual that go with each machine, and ask which safety standard for industrial sewing machines the design follows.
- Agree Incoterms and the Certificate of Origin, and ask the maker to list the serial numbers of each head, motor and control box on the packing list. Ask whether heads, tables and motors travel in separate cartons.
- Order a spares kit with the machine (needles, hooks or loopers, feed dogs and belts) and ask how settings and stored patterns can be restored remotely.
- Ask for the manual and parts list in the language your operators and mechanics read, and agree how remote video support will work after commissioning.

Industrial Sewing Machine: frequently asked questions
Who makes industrial sewing machines in India?
diipl does not publish manufacturer names. Tell diipl the machine type, speed class, fabric weight and quantity you need. diipl then matches a maker that has passed GSTIN verification and a capacity audit, confirms its Importer Exporter Code and the safety papers your market asks for, and arranges a direct meeting. For sewing machines the audit checks how heads are assembled and run in, whether hooks, loopers and feed parts are made in the factory or bought in, and a live run on your own fabric.
What should I specify when buying a commercial industrial sewing machine?
Start with the operation and the fabric: the stitch type, the fabric weight, the number of plies and the target speed. Then fix the needle system, the drive and motor, the lubrication type, the feed system and the automation you need, such as a thread trimmer. Finish with supply voltage, safety guards, and the spares and service plan. A sample seam on your own fabric settles most doubts.
Which standards or certifications apply to industrial sewing machines?
The BIS list of sewing machine standards includes IS/ISO 10821 : 2005 for the safety of industrial sewing machines, units and systems, IS 12109 : 1987 for light duty industrial machine heads, IS 15313 : 2003 for vibration measurement and IS 15169 : 2002 for industrial needles. Ask the maker which of these its machines follow, and ask for test records. For machines sold in the European Union, CE marking applies.
What is the HSN code for industrial sewing machines?
The code for industrial sewing machines depends on whether the machine counts as an automatic unit that carries out its sewing cycle by itself or as an ordinary sewing machine that the operator guides, and, under the national tariff, whether it is an industrial machine whose motor power and stitching speed pass the limits printed in the industrial machine line: 84522110 when the machine is an industrial sewing machine whose motor power and stitching speed both pass the limits printed in the national line; 84522120 when the machine is an automatic unit with electronic controls or an electric motor that does not qualify as an industrial machine under the limits printed in the national line; 84522190 when the machine is an automatic unit with neither electronic controls nor an electric motor; 84522900 when the machine is a sewing machine that is not an automatic unit under the international subheading. The export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit line and a GST invoice its first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover, so confirm the line for your exact machine before you file. The HS code finder lists every 8-digit line.
Can Indian manufacturers export industrial sewing machines?
Yes, when the maker holds an Importer Exporter Code, matches the importer's electricity supply and ships a full document set. Machines sold into the European Union fall under EU machinery rules, and CE marking can only be affixed after testing the product. Buyers in other regions may ask for the same papers, so confirm this early. Agree Incoterms, the Certificate of Origin and a spares kit before the order, and pack heads, tables and motors so they arrive undamaged.
Which industries buy industrial sewing machines?
Garment makers are the main buyers: shirt and trouser factories, knitwear and hosiery units, innerwear makers, export houses and contract stitching units. The safety standard for professional sewing machines names the clothing, shirt and blouse, hosiery and knitwear, lingerie and glove industries, among others, as places where such machines are used.
I manufacture industrial sewing machines. How do I find verified buyers?
diipl studies which garment-producing regions and buyer segments need your machine types, such as lockstitch heads, overlock and coverstitch lines or automatic units, and then runs outreach. Before any introduction, diipl confirms that the buyer has a real requirement, money set aside, someone who can sign and a date to buy. A direct meeting follows. Useful inputs from you are the speeds, bed types and fabric weights you have proven on a trial. Your name and contact details are never published.
Which industrial sewing machine do I need for which garment operation?
Match the machine to the operation. A single-needle lockstitch machine joins plies. An overlock machine seams and finishes edges, mostly on knits such as T-shirt side seams. A flatlock or coverstitch machine hems knit products. A bartack machine reinforces belt loop joins and the bottom of side pocket openings. A buttonhole machine makes buttonholes on shirts, trousers and polo shirts.
Should I choose a servo motor or a clutch motor?
A servo motor uses less electricity and is silent when the machine is not sewing. A clutch motor is always spinning, even when not in use, and makes noise whenever it is connected to power. On industrial machines the motor is separate and usually mounted under the table. Choose by running hours, noise in your hall and the service support near you.
What is the difference between a dry-head and an oil-lubricated sewing machine?
One published lockstitch range comes as a fully dry head, a semi-dry head and a minute-quantity lubrication head. The maker says all three are meant to prevent oil stains on the material, and the semi-dry head uses a frame that does not need lubrication. Ask which parts still need oil, how often, and which oil grade is specified.
Do I buy the head only, or the head with table and motor?
On many industrial machines the head, table and motor are separate parts, because the motor is usually mounted under the table. An offer can therefore cover a head only, or a head with table, stand, motor and control box. Ask in writing which parts are included, and ask for the serial numbers of the head, motor and control box on the invoice.
