Import duty on Indian exports,
by product and country

The import duty on an Indian export depends on two things: your product's HS code and the destination country. Each country sets its own MFN (most-favoured-nation) rate per HS code. For example, the United States charges about 16.5% MFN duty on Indian knit t-shirts, while the UAE charges 5%, dropping to zero under the India-UAE CEPA. Below is the MFN duty by product and market. diipl then generates verified buyers in the markets where your product actually wins.

How it is calculated

How to calculate import duty on a product from India

  1. 1

    Find your HS code

Duty is set per Harmonized System code. The first 6 digits are global; the destination country adds its own tariff-line digits. Get the code right, or the rate you look up is wrong.

  2. 2

Look up the destination's MFN rate

Each country publishes an MFN ad-valorem rate per HS code. Apply it to the customs (CIF) value of the shipment, that is goods + insurance + freight.

  3. 3

Check for an FTA preferential rate

If India has a trade agreement with that market (CEPA, ECTA, CETA), a lower preferential rate usually applies, provided you supply a valid Certificate of Origin proving the goods are Indian-origin.

  4. 4

    Add the other landed-cost lines

Import duty is separate from the destination's GST/VAT, port and handling charges, and any anti-dumping or safeguard duty. Your true margin is the full landed cost.

Import duty on Indian exports, answered

What is the import duty on Indian exports?

It depends on two things: your product's HS code and the destination country. Every country sets its own MFN (most-favoured-nation) duty per HS code. For example, the United States charges about 16.5 percent MFN duty on Indian knit t-shirts, while the UAE charges 5 percent, and that drops to zero under the India-UAE CEPA trade agreement. diipl shows the exact duty for your product and target market in a free market research report.

How do I calculate import duty on a product from India?

Import duty is charged by the importing country, not India. Find your product's HS code, then look up that country's MFN ad-valorem rate for the code and apply it to the customs (CIF) value. If India has a free trade agreement with that country (such as CEPA or ECTA) and you provide a Certificate of Origin, the lower preferential rate applies instead. diipl runs this for your exact product and every target market as part of the free market research report.

Which countries have zero or reduced import duty for Indian exporters?

Countries where India has a free trade agreement. Examples include the UAE (India-UAE CEPA), Australia (India-Australia ECTA), the UK (India-UK CETA) and Japan and South Korea (CEPA). Under these agreements, many products move at a preferential duty that is lower than the standard MFN rate, provided you submit a valid Certificate of Origin. Your free report shows the preferential rate for your product.

Is import duty the same as customs duty?

In practice, yes, the terms are used interchangeably for the tax the importing country charges on your goods. It is separate from GST/VAT, port and handling charges, and any anti-dumping or safeguard duty. What matters for your margin is the combined landed cost, which diipl factors into every buyer match so the meetings you take can actually transact.

Does diipl sell import-duty or trade data?

No. diipl is a buyer generation platform, not a data vendor. The duty and demand intelligence is the magnet that proves how we penetrate a market. We use it to target the right buyers in the right markets and verify each one before you meet. We never sell data or scraped contact lists.
