What is a commercial power press?

A power press is a mechanical press. An electric motor keeps a heavy flywheel turning, and the flywheel stores energy. When the operator trips the press, a clutch joins the flywheel to a crankshaft or eccentric shaft, and the shaft drives the slide up and down. A die set fixed between the slide and the bed cuts or forms the sheet metal. The clutch and brake start and stop the slide. Presses are built with a C-shaped or H-shaped frame. They are fast and repeatable, so factories use them for blanking, piercing, bending, forming and shallow drawing in long production runs.

This page covers commercial and industrial mechanical power presses for sheet metal work; bench, hobby and home-use presses are not covered.

How diipl verifies power press manufacturers

diipl checks every power press manufacturer before a buyer meets them. Every seller is GSTIN verified and capacity audited. IEC and the certifications your product and market need (ISO, CE, REACH, BIS) are confirmed before any meeting; Certificate of Origin and EIC inspection are arranged per shipment where required.

For power presses, the capacity audit also covers:

  • a loaded test run at rated tonnage with a real die on the factory floor, checking that the slide stays parallel to the bed and measuring the stopping time
  • in-house capacity to cut, weld, stress-relieve and machine press frames, and to machine crankshaft journals, slides and gibs
  • a working test of the clutch, brake and red stop control, and of the single-stroke, inch and continuous modes, with the main disconnect and motor starter
  • the safeguards on the floor model: flywheel and gear guards fitted, and the light curtain or two-hand controls tested with the press
  • balance and fit of the flywheel, the state of the crankshaft bearings or bushes, and the lubrication lines to every bearing point

We match your requirement to a manufacturer that has passed these checks and arrange a direct meeting.

Types of power presses we cover

Indian power press manufacturers on the diipl bench build these commercial and industrial types.

TypeTypical buyers
C-frame (gap-frame) power pressSheet metal workshops and makers of two-wheeler parts, electrical fittings, hardware, utensils and agricultural hand tools.
Inclinable (OBI) power pressStampers of small and medium parts who run mechanical feeds for rapid automatic production.
H-frame (pillar) power pressMakers of structural brackets, suspension and chassis parts, plough bodies, distribution panel housings, switchgear components and transformer cores.
Two-point power pressStampers who run long progressive dies or long, narrow parts from blanks or coil stock.
Pneumatic clutch power pressShops whose production cycle and control system call for air-operated clutch and brake control.
Geared power press (single or double reduction)Makers of drawn and formed parts who need more energy and a slower slide than a plain flywheel press gives.

C-frame (gap-frame) power press

The frame is shaped like the letter C, so the die space is open at the front and on both sides. Dies, coil feeders and finished parts are easy to reach, and the machine takes little floor space. At high tonnage the open frame can flex slightly under load, so it suits light to medium blanking, piercing, bending and forming rather than very tight tolerances on thick plate.

Inclinable (OBI) power press

A small or medium mechanical crank press, usually an open-back gap frame, that can be tilted backward by up to 45 degrees so finished parts slide out by gravity. Makers usually fit a mechanical feed for rapid automatic production. Choose it for blanking, piercing, forming and shallow drawing of small and medium parts. Such presses are described as built up to 200 tons.

H-frame (pillar) power press

A closed frame with a column on each side, shaped like the letter H. It resists bending under load, so dies stay parallel and part quality holds over long runs. Choose it for thick plate, deep drawing, heavy forming, higher tonnage and tight die alignment. It takes more floor space than a C-frame press, and die changes are a little slower.

Two-point power press

The slide is driven through two connections instead of one. This gives a large die area, so it suits long, narrow parts and progressive dies that need a longer bed. Makers build two-point presses with a gap frame or a straight-side frame. Choose it when the die needs the longer bed area and the work is run from blanks or coil at high stroking rates.

Pneumatic clutch power press

In a pneumatic clutch and brake arrangement, compressed air controls the engagement and braking of the press mechanism. Makers also list a separate air-driven press for lighter operations, so confirm which one is meant before you order. The right choice depends on the production cycle, the control system and the operating needs. Ask the maker which parts of the press are air-operated and what air supply they need.

Geared power press (single or double reduction)

A gear train sits between the flywheel shaft and the crankshaft, which gives more energy at a slower slide speed than a plain flywheel press. Single-geared presses suit forming and shallow draws, generally at 30 to 90 strokes a minute. Double-geared presses suit deeper draws at 10 to 30 strokes a minute. Plain non-geared presses suit fast blanking and piercing at 90 strokes a minute and above.

What to specify when buying a power press

A clear power press specification gets you comparable offers and a faster meeting. Share these points with diipl and we match them to the right manufacturer.

What to specifyWhy it matters
Rated capacity (tonnage) and rating pointAsk where in the stroke the full rating applies. A plain flywheel press is rated very close to the bottom of the stroke and a geared press further up, so match the rating point to your die's energy need.
Tonnage needed for your partsCutting force is about the total cut length times sheet thickness times shear strength. Mild steel is commonly taken at about 30 to 40 kg per square millimetre. Add a margin for die wear and thickness tolerance.
Flywheel energy and drive typeTonnage is not energy. Ask for the maker's energy graph, since flywheel energy depends on flywheel size and drive ratio. The flywheel usually slows 10 to 15 percent a stroke; more than 15 percent can jam the press.
Stroke lengthStroke is the distance the slide travels. It must be long enough for the depth of the part you draw, but a stroke that is too long is wasted and means fewer parts per minute.
Strokes per minuteSpeed must suit the material, because the maximum drawing speed of the metal limits slide speed. Plain non-geared presses commonly run at 90 strokes per minute and above, single-geared at 30 to 90, double-geared at 10 to 30.
Shut height and slide adjustmentShut height is the distance from the top of the bed to the bottom of the slide with the stroke down and adjustment up. Your tallest and shortest dies must both fit inside the adjustment range.
Bed (bolster) and slide sizeThe bed needs room for the upper and lower die plates, die springs and mounting devices. On a press with a window, the window must also pass the width of the material.
Throat depth (C-frame and inclinable)Throat depth, also called the gap, is the distance from the slide centreline back to the frame upright. Check it against your largest blank or die.
Frame type and deflectionA straight-side frame has two sides and four to eight guideways for the slide, which reduces deflection and handles off-centre loads better. A C-frame deflects more under off-centre load, so check it against your tolerance.
Clutch, brake and stopping timeMost clutches and brakes are spring-applied with a pneumatic or hydraulic release. Stopping time sets both the speed the press can run and the safety of operator and die, so ask for the measured stopping time.
Operating modes and stop controlsFor presses with a part-revolution clutch, a government workplace rule published outside India expects a way to select off, inch, single stroke and continuous, and a red stop control that overrides other controls and applies the brake.
Safeguarding at the point of operationAsk which guards are fitted, such as fixed guards, light curtains or two-hand controls. That rule also requires a brake monitor and a reliable control system where hand feeding relies on light curtains, two-hand controls or a movable barrier.
Overload protectionAsk whether the press has overload protection and how fast it acts. One maker describes a hydraulic overload that relieves a tonnage overload in milliseconds and stops the press, protecting press and dies.
Die cushion, knockout and feedA die cushion gives blank holding, drawing, knock-out and stripping force, and air cushions are the most common. Ask whether a cushion, a knockout or a mechanical feed is part of the offer.

HSN code and ITC-HS code for power presses

Power presses are classified under ITC-HS 84626200 (mechanical presses), within HS subheading 846262 (machine-tools; cold metal working presses, mechanical presses). The 6-digit subheading is the same in every country that uses the Harmonized System; the 8-digit ITC-HS line is the one India files.

In India the GST HSN code and the export ITC-HS code come from the same nomenclature. A GST invoice needs only the first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover; the export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit ITC-HS line. The classification is shown here; the applicable GST rate is not. Official source.

Your opportunity

Indian power press makers already ship this line abroad. diipl finds the markets where your machine can win and generates the verified buyers there.

A classification is a fact any lookup can give you. The correct code still does not tell you which countries are buying power presses right now, what duty each of them charges on the Indian line, or whether that demand is growing or fading. Those answers come from trade data, not from a code table, and they decide whether a market is worth entering. diipl's free Market Research Report answers them for your machine.

Buying a power press in India

  • Ask for a GST invoice that lists the press, the main motor and starter, the clutch and air system, the guards and any tooling or accessories as separate lines.
  • Agree the foundation drawing, anchor bolts, floor space for die changes and feeding, and who prepares the foundation, before the press is dispatched.
  • Plan installation and commissioning at your site: levelling, wiring, the compressed air supply for a pneumatic clutch, and a trial run with your own die before you accept the press.
  • Ask for operator training on the single-stroke, inch and continuous modes, the stop controls, the safeguards and safe die setting.
  • Agree spares and service: crankshaft bushes, clutch and brake parts, gibs, solenoid valves and lubrication parts, with a named service contact and a stated response time.
  • Check delivery of the heavy frame and flywheel, including transport, crane unloading and positioning on the foundation.

Buying from Indian power press exporters

  • Agree which safety standard the press is built to before the order is placed. A press is a high-hazard machine, so ask the importer for the documents it needs, such as the risk assessment, the safeguarding arrangement and a stopping-time test report.
  • For the European Union, ask the maker which conformity route is used for a press with manual loading, and whether a notified body is involved. The EU machinery rules are changing, so ask the importer which text applies on the delivery date.
  • Agree the Incoterm in writing, whether the press ships assembled or in sections, and who refits the flywheel, guards and clutch parts on arrival.
  • Match the local voltage, frequency and number of phases for the main motor and control panel, and write it on the order. Check the compressed air supply if the press has a pneumatic clutch.
  • Ask for the Certificate of Origin, a commercial invoice with a full parts list and a packing list that shows loose parts.
  • Pack heavy parts on skids, coat machined surfaces against rust, pack the flywheel and guards separately, and plan a spares kit of clutch and brake parts, bushes and valves with remote support by video call.

Power Press: frequently asked questions

Who makes power presses in India?

diipl does not publish manufacturer names. Tell diipl the part, material, thickness and output you need, and diipl matches a manufacturer that has passed GSTIN verification and a capacity audit. diipl also confirms the manufacturer's Importer Exporter Code (IEC) and the certifications your market needs, then arranges a direct meeting. For a power press, the audit covers in-house frame fabrication, crankshaft machining, clutch and brake fitting and a loaded test run at rated tonnage.

What should I specify when buying a commercial power press?

Share the component drawing, material, thickness, operation and the output you need. Then agree tonnage together with the rating point, flywheel energy, stroke, strokes per minute, bed and slide size, shut height, frame type, tooling and safety features. Tonnage alone does not decide whether a press suits the job.

Which standards or certifications apply to power presses?

In India, BIS has published the IS 17277 series on press safety. Part 2, dated 2023, is titled Safety Requirement for Mechanical Presses and is identical to ISO 16092-2:2019. Part 1, dated 2019, gives the general safety requirements for presses. Whether a buyer asks for compliance is a matter for the order, so agree it in writing. Buyers in other regions may ask for their own conformity marking, so confirm the market before you order.

What is the HSN code for power presses?

Power Presses are classified under ITC-HS 84626200 (mechanical presses), within HS subheading 846262. The export shipping bill carries this full 8-digit line; a GST invoice needs only its first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover. Confirm the 8-digit line against your exact machine before you file.

Can Indian manufacturers export power presses?

Yes, if the press meets the safety rules of the buyer's region. In the European Union, presses for cold working of metal with manual loading, whose moving parts may travel more than 6 mm at over 30 mm/s, are on the higher-risk Annex IV list of the Machinery Directive. If the press is built fully to harmonised standards that cover all safety requirements, the maker can use internal checks, EC type-examination plus internal checks or full quality assurance. Otherwise only the last two are open. Agree supply, spares and packing.

Which industries buy power presses?

Buyers include makers of two-wheeler and auto parts, electrical fittings, switchgear housings and transformer cores, kitchen utensils, hardware, agricultural hand tools, and parts for tractors, earthmoving and material handling equipment. Lighter work usually goes on C-frame presses. Thick plate and tight die alignment push buyers toward H-frame presses.

I manufacture power presses. How do I find verified buyers?

diipl studies which buyer groups and regions need power presses, such as stamping shops, auto-component units and electrical fittings makers, and reaches them through its own outreach. Before any introduction, diipl checks that the buyer has a real requirement, funds in place, the authority to decide and a purchase date in view, then arranges a direct meeting. Your name and contact details are never published. For a power press, diipl also asks the buyer for the part drawing, material and thickness.

How do I work out the tonnage I need for blanking and punching?

The force is about the length of the cut times the sheet thickness times the shear strength of the material. Mild steel is commonly taken at about 30 to 40 kg per square millimetre. Add up the length of every cut, add a margin for die wear and thickness tolerance, then choose the next standard press size above. Bending uses a separate calculation that depends on the die opening.

Why does a power press need both a tonnage rating and an energy rating?

Sizing a die to a press needs two calculations: the force and the energy used. Rated tonnage is not the same as the energy the flywheel can give, which depends on flywheel size and drive ratio, and each maker supplies an energy graph. In each stroke the flywheel usually slows by 10 to 15 percent. If it slows by more than 15 percent, the motor cannot restore the energy in time, and after several strokes the press can jam at the bottom of the stroke.

How do I choose between a C-frame and an H-frame power press?

A C-frame press is open at the front and sides, so dies and feeders are easy to reach, and it takes less floor space. It suits light to medium work. An H-frame press has a closed frame with a column on each side. It resists bending and keeps dies aligned, so it suits thick plate, deep drawing, heavy forming and tight tolerances. It takes more floor space, and die changes are a little slower.

How often should the clutch and brake of a power press be checked?

Follow the maker's service schedule. One government workplace rule published outside India asks for a clutch and brake test at least once a week, covering the anti-repeat feature and the single-stroke mechanism, with repairs done before the press runs. That weekly test is not asked of presses that have a brake monitor and a control system that blocks the next stroke after a failure.
