What is a commercial surface & cylindrical grinder?

A grinding machine shapes metal with a fast-spinning abrasive wheel. On a surface grinder the part sits on a table, usually held by a magnetic chuck, and the table moves back and forth under the wheel while the wheel head is lowered in small steps to take a thin layer off a flat face. On a cylindrical grinder the part turns between centres or in a chuck while the wheel cuts its outer diameter, either by moving along the part or by plunging straight in. Both are finishing machines. They bring a part to its final size, flatness and finish with very light cuts.

This page covers commercial and industrial surface grinders with a horizontal wheel spindle and external cylindrical grinders; bench and hand-held grinders, home-use models, centreless, tool and cutter, jig, gear, internal-only and vertical-spindle disc grinders are not covered.

How diipl verifies surface & cylindrical grinder manufacturers

diipl checks every surface & cylindrical grinder manufacturer before a buyer meets them. Every seller is GSTIN verified and capacity audited. IEC and the certifications your product and market need (ISO, CE, REACH, BIS) are confirmed before any meeting; Certificate of Origin and EIC inspection are arranged per shipment where required.

For surface & cylindrical grinders, the capacity audit also covers:

  • A grinding trial on the factory floor: a steel test block ground flat on the surface grinder and a test shaft ground between centres on the cylindrical grinder, then checked for flatness, parallelism, roundness and taper with the builder's gauges and your own
  • The condition of the bed, column, table and saddle castings and their slideways, with a check that the table travels straight and reverses smoothly under hydraulic or hand drive
  • Spindle assembly and wheel mounting: spindle run-out checked at working speed, the wheel balanced on a stand, and the spindle temperature checked after a long run
  • The hydraulic circuit and coolant system built and tested on the floor: pump, valve block, oil temperature, leaks, table speed control, table reversal and coolant filtration
  • The wheel guard, interlocks and emergency stop fitted and tried, and, for automatic and CNC machines, the controller run through a full grind cycle with wheel dressing

We match your requirement to a manufacturer that has passed these checks and arrange a direct meeting.

Types of surface & cylindrical grinders we cover

Indian surface & cylindrical grinder manufacturers on the diipl bench build these commercial and industrial types.

TypeTypical buyers
Manual surface grinder (hand-set feeds)Workshops that do precision surface and form grinding
Hydraulic surface grinder (hydraulic table drive)Tool rooms, job shops and maintenance departments handling varied parts
Automatic surface grinder (PLC controlled, multi-axis)Shops that grind the same parts in repeat batches
Manual-feed universal cylindrical grinderWorkshops grinding precision rods, tubes and bushings with hand-set feeds
Hydraulic cylindrical grinder (universal or production)Batch production that needs fine tolerance and a fine finish on round parts
CNC cylindrical grinderPlants grinding round parts in repeat batches

Manual surface grinder (hand-set feeds)

A surface grinder where the operator sets the movements by hand. One maker's manual model has a 150 by 460 mm table, 482 mm of manual table travel, 180 mm of manual traverse travel, a 1.5 kW spindle motor and an 8 inch wheel. The maker lists it among its manual surface grinders and describes it as suitable for both precision surface grinding and form grinding. Choose it where each cut is set by hand.

Hydraulic surface grinder (hydraulic table drive)

A horizontal-spindle machine whose table movement is regulated by hydraulic pressure, with the operator handling setup, monitoring and the grinding cycle. It suits work that changes from job to job in tool rooms, job shops and maintenance departments. It is not numerically controlled. Choose it for flexible work where parts vary.

Automatic surface grinder (PLC controlled, multi-axis)

A column-type machine with a touch-screen PLC controller. One maker's 3-axis series runs preset rough grind, fine grind and spark-out cycles, switches the down-feed and cross-feed steps at preset points, parks the table and saddle for loading, and with an optional dresser dresses the wheel and makes up for it automatically. Choose it for repeat batches with less operator involvement.

Manual-feed universal cylindrical grinder

A universal cylindrical grinder whose feeds are moved by hand. One maker lists it as the F type, the manual-feed type in a series with a wheel head that swivels 30 degrees either way. In that series the 200 mm swing model has centres 250 or 500 mm apart, grinds up to 100 mm diameter, carries 20 kg between centres and uses a 305 mm wheel at 33 m/s. Choose it where each cut is set by hand.

Hydraulic cylindrical grinder (universal or production)

A cylindrical grinder with an infinitely variable hydraulic table traverse, a dwell and automatic infeed at each table reversal. One Indian maker lists it under its non-CNC cylindrical grinders, in universal and production models. The universal models have a swivelling wheel head and built-in provision for internal grinding. The range has centre heights of 175 and 225 mm and 800 to 2000 mm between centres.

CNC cylindrical grinder

A cylindrical grinder run by numerical control instead of hand or hydraulic settings. One maker lists a one-axis CNC universal grinder with a 300 mm swing over table, centres 400 to 2100 mm apart, a 300 mm maximum grinding diameter, 130 kg between centres and a 355 mm wheel at 33 m/s. Choose it for repeat batches of round parts.

What to specify when buying a surface & cylindrical grinder

A clear surface & cylindrical grinder specification gets you comparable offers and a faster meeting. Share these points with diipl and we match them to the right manufacturer.

What to specifyWhy it matters
Table size and travel on each axisTable and travel set the largest flat part. One automatic model with an 8 by 18 inch table has 18.9 inch (about 480 mm) of hydraulic longitudinal travel and 9.25 inch (about 235 mm) of automatic cross travel.
Height from table to wheel spindleThis sets how tall a part, with its chuck or vice, can be ground. One maker gives 18 inch (about 457 mm) from the table surface to the spindle centreline.
Wheel size, spindle speed and motor powerWheel, speed and power decide stock removal and finish. One surface grinder takes an 8 inch wheel, 0.5 to 0.75 inch wide, at 3450 rpm with a 2 hp motor. Check the motor rating against your supply.
Table speed and hydraulic driveThe table should run at a set speed and reverse smoothly. One automatic model has an infinitely variable table speed of 196 to 984 inch per minute. Ask how the oil is kept cool.
Infeed and cross-feed stepsFiner steps give finer control of size. One automatic model lists vertical infeed of 0.00005 to 0.0025 inch, a step jog of 0.00004 inch and a cross-feed handwheel graduation of 0.0005 inch.
Magnetic chuck and other workholdingSteel parts sit on a magnetic chuck. Non-magnetic and non-metal parts need vacuum or mechanical holding, or a steel vice on the chuck. Ask for a chuck sized to the table and for a demagnetiser.
Centre height, swing and distance between centres (cylindrical)These set the largest round part. One Indian maker lists centre heights of 175 and 225 mm, swings of 350 and 450 mm, 800 to 2000 mm between centres and a 5.5 kW wheel motor.
Load between centres and maximum grinding diameter (cylindrical)Heavy shafts need a stronger workhead and tailstock. One maker lists 130 kg between centres and a 270 mm maximum grinding diameter on its 300 mm swing manual, hydraulic and automatic universal grinders.
Wheel-head swivel and internal grindingA universal machine swivels the wheel head. One maker lists 30 degrees either way. Ask whether internal grinding is provided, with which spindle, and what bore sizes it can reach.
Control and automatic cyclesAsk whether feeds are set by hand, by hydraulics or by a controller. One PLC-controlled series offers rough grind, fine grind and spark-out cycles, a parking position for loading and an optional automatic dresser with compensation.
Wheel dressing and truingDressing removes clogged and blunt grains. Truing makes the wheel run true to the spindle axis, and a new wheel must be trued before use. Ask for a table-mounted diamond dresser and a balancing stand with arbor.
Accuracy test record for a surface grinderAsk for the builder's test record under the machine tool test code. ISO 1986-1:2014 gives geometric and machining tests for horizontal-spindle surface grinders with a reciprocating table up to 1 600 mm long.
Accuracy test record for a cylindrical grinderAsk for the test record under ISO 2433:1999, the machine tool test code for external cylindrical and universal grinders with a movable table. Ask which tests were run on your machine, not on a model of the same type.
Coolant, filtration and extractionCoolant carries heat away so the part stays within tolerance. Ask for the tank, the pump and how swarf and grinding sludge are filtered out, and for mist or dust extraction if you grind with oil or dry.

HSN code and ITC-HS code for surface & cylindrical grinders

The code for surface & cylindrical grinders depends on whether the grinder is a flat surface machine or a cylindrical machine, and whether it is numerically controlled. Choose the line that matches your machine:

  • 84601900 (other, within subheading 846019: machine-tools; flat-surface grinding machines, other than numerically controlled) when the grinder is a flat surface grinder without numerical control, such as a hand set or a hydraulic table machine.
  • 84601200 (numerically controlled) when the grinder is a flat surface grinder with numerical control.
  • 84602910 (cylindrical grinders) when the grinder is a cylindrical grinder without numerical control.
  • 84602300 (other cylindrical grinding machines, numerically controlled) when the grinder is a cylindrical grinder with numerical control.

Flat surface grinders and cylindrical grinders sit in different subheadings of the same heading, and each subheading splits on numerical control. A grinder run by a programmable logic controller with preset cycles is not settled by any official text we could confirm, so confirm whether it counts as numerically controlled before you file.

In India the GST HSN code and the export ITC-HS code come from the same nomenclature. A GST invoice needs only the first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover; the export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit ITC-HS line. The classification is shown here; the applicable GST rate is not. Official source.

A classification is a fact any lookup can give you. The correct code still does not tell you which countries are buying surface & cylindrical grinders right now, what duty each of them charges on the Indian line, or whether that demand is growing or fading. Those answers come from trade data, not from a code table, and they decide whether a market is worth entering. diipl's free Market Research Report answers them for your machine.

Buying a surface & cylindrical grinder in India

  • Check that the GST invoice names the machine, its HSN line and the tax rate, and that the GSTIN printed on it is the builder's own.
  • Prepare the floor before delivery: a level, firm base to the builder's drawing, away from heavy vibrating machines, in a clean dry bay with a steady power supply.
  • Put installation and commissioning in the contract: levelling, filling and testing the hydraulic circuit, running the spindle, and grinding a test part of yours before you sign off the machine.
  • Book operator training on mounting and balancing the wheel, dressing and truing, setting the feeds and reading the dials or screen. Ask for the manual and, on automatic and CNC machines, help with the first programs.
  • Agree a spares list and who supplies it: grinding wheels, flanges, chuck parts, hydraulic seals and filters, the coolant pump, belts and dressing diamonds. Ask how fast a service engineer can reach your plant.
  • Agree what ships with the machine, such as the magnetic chuck and demagnetiser, a balancing stand, a diamond dresser, the coolant system and the first wheels, so nothing is left to buy after delivery.

Buying from Indian surface & cylindrical grinder exporters

  • Ask which safety route the machine follows. For the European Union, ask for CE marking, an EU declaration of conformity and instructions your operators can read, and ask the builder to name the grinding machine safety standard its design follows. For North America, ask how the wheel guard and its opening meet local workplace rules.
  • Ask for the accuracy test record of your own machine, with flatness and parallelism results for a surface grinder or roundness and taper results for a cylindrical grinder, and ask to see a test part ground before dispatch.
  • Tell the builder your supply voltage, number of phases and frequency in writing so the spindle, hydraulic and coolant motors, the controller and the chuck supply are built for it. Spindle speed changes with frequency, so check the wheel's marked speed limit again.
  • Order the first grinding wheels with the machine, marked for its spindle speed, and a set of wear parts. Ask the builder which wheel marking suits your steel or alloy.
  • Ask for slideways, spindle and chuck to be coated and wrapped against rust and moisture for sea freight, with the magnetic chuck, wheel guard and loose accessories in separate crates listed one by one on the packing list.
  • Fix the Incoterm (EXW, FOB or CIF) in the contract, ask whether a Certificate of Origin is needed under your import rules, and agree remote support by video call for the first weeks of use.

Surface & Cylindrical Grinder: frequently asked questions

Who makes surface and cylindrical grinding machines in India?

diipl keeps maker names off the website. Send the work you need ground: the largest part, the material, the finish and how many pieces. diipl then proposes a builder whose GSTIN is verified and whose factory has passed a capacity audit, checks its Importer Exporter Code, and sets up your first meeting. For these machines the audit includes grinding a test part and checking it for flatness or roundness.

Which table size, wheel and feed control should I ask for?

Start from your largest part. For a surface grinder, note its length, width and height with the chuck, and the material. For a cylindrical grinder, note the longest shaft, its largest diameter and its weight. Then decide how the feeds are set: by hand, by hydraulics or by a controller. Add wheel size, spindle power, chuck, coolant filtration and your power supply, and ask for a trial grind on your own part.

Which standards or certifications apply to surface and cylindrical grinders?

The international safety standard for stationary grinding machines designed mainly to shape metal is ISO 16089:2025. It covers three groups: manually controlled, manually controlled with power-operated axes and limited numerical control, and numerically controlled. It excludes honing, polishing and belt grinding machines. Indian accuracy test codes and export rules are listed under compliance on this page.

What is the HSN code for surface & cylindrical grinders?

The code for surface & cylindrical grinders depends on whether the grinder is a flat surface machine or a cylindrical machine, and whether it is numerically controlled: 84601900 when the grinder is a flat surface grinder without numerical control, such as a hand set or a hydraulic table machine; 84601200 when the grinder is a flat surface grinder with numerical control; 84602910 when the grinder is a cylindrical grinder without numerical control; 84602300 when the grinder is a cylindrical grinder with numerical control. Flat surface grinders and cylindrical grinders sit in different subheadings of the same heading, and each subheading splits on numerical control. A grinder run by a programmable logic controller with preset cycles is not settled by any official text we could confirm, so confirm whether it counts as numerically controlled before you file. The export shipping bill carries the full 8-digit line and a GST invoice its first 4 or 6 digits, depending on your turnover, so confirm the line for your exact machine before you file. The HS code finder lists every 8-digit line.

Can Indian manufacturers export surface and cylindrical grinders?

Yes, if the machine meets the safety rules of the buyer's region. For the European Union, CE marking can only be affixed after testing and the conformity assessment, so ask for the declaration of conformity. For North America, the wheel guard is checked against local workplace rules. Importers also match voltage and frequency, ask for the accuracy test record, and agree the Incoterm, packing and remote support. diipl confirms the builder's Importer Exporter Code first.

Which industries buy surface and cylindrical grinders?

Buyers come from sectors that use machine tools: automotive, aerospace, electronics and medical devices. Tool rooms and die makers, bearing and bush makers, and makers of precision rods and tubes use grinders to finish flat faces and round parts. Maintenance workshops and job shops use hydraulic surface grinders for varied work.

I make grinding machines. How do I find verified buyers?

diipl studies which buyer groups need your machine type, such as tool rooms for manual and hydraulic surface grinders or shaft and bush makers for cylindrical grinders, and in which regions. It then reaches out for you and screens each buyer on need, funds, authority to sign and timing before putting a meeting in front of you. For grinders, diipl also notes the part size and finish each buyer needs. Your company name and contact details stay off the site.

How do manual, hydraulic and CNC surface grinders differ?

A manual surface grinder has hand-set feeds. A hydraulic surface grinder uses hydraulic pressure to regulate its movement and is commonly used in toolrooms and maintenance workshops, and it suits tough materials such as steel and carbide. A CNC surface grinder runs pre-programmed grinding cycles with little operator input and is typically found in aerospace, medical and high-tech work. Horizontal machines come with manual or automated feeds, so choose by batch size and the operator skill you can spare.

What is the difference between a universal and a production cylindrical grinder?

One Indian maker lists both. The universal model has a swivelling wheel head and built-in provision for internal grinding. The production model takes a larger wheel, up to 500 mm against 450 mm on the universal. Both have an infinitely variable hydraulic table traverse with a dwell and automatic infeed at the table reversals, and both are designed for batch production to fine tolerance.

Can a surface grinder hold non-magnetic parts?

Yes. Steel and iron parts are held by a magnetic chuck. Non-magnetic and non-metal parts are held by vacuum or by mechanical means, or by a ferromagnetic steel or cast iron vice placed on the magnetic chuck. If your work is aluminium, brass or plastic, ask the builder for a vacuum chuck or a vice, and for a demagnetiser so ground steel parts release cleanly.

What is the difference between dressing and truing a grinding wheel?

Dressing removes clogged surface material and blunt grains so that fresh sharp grains cut again. Truing shapes the wheel so it runs true to the spindle axis, and a new wheel must be trued before use. Dressing and truing are done at the same time. Before mounting, each wheel is tapped: a clear ringing sound means no crack, and a dull sound means the wheel must not be used.
